After seeing him on BBC's "The Office" (as Tim Canterbury) and in the film "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (as Arthur Dent), I believe that Martin Freeman is a strong contender to play Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit" for 2010! He certainly looks the part, and I believe he can play the part! What do you all think?!

just to clear things up for anyone who doesn't know who that is. As I said before.. interesting, but I have no suggestions for Bilbo (as the actors I would choose are too old for the role now) |

Why not Ian Holm from LOTR? How much earlier was the Hobbit set before LOTR? Makeup can work wonders...

First off, just to make him took half way decent in LotR, he needed a ton of makeup and wires, which barely stayed in place for the 30 second scene he was in. It is impossible for him to do this for an entire movie. He does not look Frodo's age at all, for that is the age that Frodo decided to start his adventure as well. They should look the same age and hobbits do not age as fast as humans, Bilbo even less so because of the ring. When you see him in end of the movie, he is suppose to be around 140 (?I forget the exact age). Either way, he is 111 on his birthday, and i don't know anyone 100+ that looks that young.
So they need a new, younger actor. They have already said they will not use Ian Holmes for Biblo anyways. Last edited by CptGreedle; 02-12-2008 at 07:43 PM. |

I normally agree with you but I actually liked Harrison Ford much better as Jack Ryan than Alec Baldwin. I read all of the Clancy novels and Ford seemed to hit that "everyman" quality that was Jack Ryan's trademark. Sorry to derail the thread.

i agree with your idea. I don't know if the new actor will nail it the way Ford did Ryan, but having a new face does make sense here. With makeup they can do a lot. If Del Toro's at the helm it will help a lot too... he does great make-up. lol

Good Choice, he was good in Hitchhiker's Guide and yes, he would make a good hobbit, even has a accent!
