Default Désirée (1954) Review + order from Amazon

Désirée Blu-ray order from Amazon

Désirée Blu-ray Review

don't think there is an individual thread for this TT release.
just got my copy today.
(btw: it does come with a collectable magnet)
can't wait to check out Brando in this fictionalised story of Désirée Clary and her relationship with Napoleon.
original artwork-- http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...px-Desiree.jpg

So there are magnets for Bell, Book and Candle and Desiree?

How did you get your copy since the release is tomorrow?

by the way, I'm looking forward to it also.
I heard it's looking good in Bluray.

just like everyone else.
SAE was really on the ball this time and sent out both titles so that they would arrive on or even before release day.
trust me I was totally shocked to see SAE on that envelope.
if you look at the BBandC thread many people posted receiving their copy even before today.

Arkadin...... Let us know how Desiree looks and sounds on Blu-ray. I have not ordered this title yet from SAE. Somehow, I have never seen this movie.. so my interest is so-so. Thanks in advance.

Solves the mystery for me about how they normally ship two items. So likely they still normally ship single items in envelopes as well. (Don't mind me, just thinking out loud.)

There's a review up on the Home Theater Forum Pirate King.

Great numbers for AQ and PQ, but not as high for the movie, which jibes with my recollection of seeing Désirée on Laserdisc back in the early 90s.

This blu-ray have the same UPC code than Roots of Heaven. SAE needs some quality control in their releases. They are not Criterion for sure. Anyway, great PQ and AQ. I'm happy with my purchase.

Regards,

I just finished watching my copy (which arrived today) and totally agree with the review I just read on this site regarding PQ and AQ. Nicely done Twilight Time! The colors were vibrant and the image was so natural looking (unlike Spartacus). Now if only Spartacus would be released with the same PQ, I would be totally happy.

Agreed. From what I see here, the reviewer's minor reservations about the colour timing (a yellow or brown bias at times) do not seem to be taking into account the 'creaminess' of some Eastmancolor 'Scope processing.

Of course, I haven't seen this Désirée Blu-ray yet (the last time I even saw the movie was on Laserdisc 20 years ago), but nothing shown in those caps seems out of whack for vintage Eastman stock.

The review says:
Quote:
....in 1951, and it seemed to be the sort of perfect lavish period opportunity that suited the new widescreen "phenomenon" of CinemaScope, which was finally giving Fox honchos a little sense of relief after several years of box office attrition due to the increased popularity of television.
While this has always been the general peception, it's simply not accurate. At the end of 1951, there were 10.32 million TV homes in the U.S., yet the theatrical box office had declined from 82 to 90 million weekly admissions in 1946 to 50 million weekly admissions in 1950. 10 million TVs do not explain the decline of 36 million tickets per week.

What does explain the massive decline is the soldiers returning home after WWII who wanted to raise families, and who moved from the cities to the suburbs and the lack of theatres in those suburbs. And once they started having kids, they largely stayed home.

Now the decline in admissions between 1951 and 1964 (to only 20 million weekly admissions) can be largely explained by the rise of TV. By 1964, 92.3% (51.6 million) of U.S. homes had a TV.

I wonder why this is listed under the Pre-Order section now? It's not available for Pre-Order at Amazon. Just available for sale through Amazon by Screen Archives. The same goes for 'Bell, Book & Candle'.

This stinks. I am hoping they fix it and send out replacement artwork. Any chance of that happening?
