Question ps3 as a blu ray player...80gb or 40gb

im not sure if this should be in the ps3 section but i am asking a question about the ps3 as a blu ray player, so i thought i should put it here. anyway,

i was wondering if the blu ray disc drive in the ps3 is different in the 80 gig version than the 40 gig version?

or if the only difference is the additional 40gb and maybe some gaming capabilities?

80 GB has the additional items..

40GB extra space
SACD playback
PS2 compatibility
Memory card slots for SD/Memorystick/Compact Flash

The memory card slots are very handy for updating firmware if you have difficulties getting the PS3 to connect to the Internet via WiFi. I had precisely that problem (but an update to my router's firmware eventually solved the issue).

I own the 80gb, but I hear the 40gb is a lot quieter. But this might be immaterial for Blu-ray playback?

We're building a new house and I fully intend to put a 40gb in the living room and put the 80gb in the tech closet for the media room. Thank god for Bluetooth!

Internally the 40 GB PS3 is completely redesigned and consumes less power than the 80 GB model. If Blu-ray is absolutely the only reason you're buying one I'd go with the 40 GB model.

I to am wondring about the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. Is it as worthy as other standalone units? Will I be missing anything if I choose to go with the PS3?

I'm ready to buy one today but am unsure of which route to go.

most on the site agree that the PS3 is the best blu-ray player currently out. It is the only one so far that will be 2.0 (needs firmware update)

I have the 40 gig and I can tell you it is an outstanding unit. Be sure to get the Sony Blu-Ray Remote with it. Firmware updates are very easy, just burn them to CD. Very Quiet, and the upscaling is great with DVD's (for those who have an extensive library of DVD's).

Just make sure your Surround Reciever has HDMI 1.3 capability and it decodes lossless itself.

If you're mostly just interested in blu-ray, I'd get the 40-gig one.

If you have a HDMI receiver, things are fine but if you don't, standalones are probably more flexible with audio (i.e. they might have more analog outs and can potentially use lossless even without HDMI).

It doesn't fully decode DTS-HD MA yet (we just get the core track -- 1.5 mbps -- but the core is still a lot better than DVD or the legacy codecs). Also, while DTS-HD MA is said to be coming, I'm not sure if we've had an official statement on that.

Remote is bluetooth, and I love that, but if you mostly use a universal remote it won't work with the PS3. That are some inexpensive IR addons for the PS3 that will allow it to be operated with a universal but most of them won't be able to power on/off the PS3. I did see a link to one that would but it seemed like they were from a guy that was custom building them.

The shape of the top is curved so it needs to be on top of the stack or on its own shelf.

On the plus side, it's one of the fastest, seems to have the least compatibility issues, is very flexible, has great upscaling of DVDs and and can be easily upgraded to BD-Live (profile 2.0). Plus, it can do a lot more than just watch movies.

Well If you have lots of videos/MP3s then get a 80 but if you don't have any get a 40.

Thx for all the info eveyone. You have helped me alot.

One question though. I dont run a receiver per say, I run everything into my tv (Samsung HP-S4233)and then out to my Logitech Z-5500's. Do I need to see what my tv's decoders are? Im a total n00b when it comes to this stuff and want to make sure I have it all set up for optimal sound & video.

Any help or insight is appreciated.

Thx again

If you're going to get an 80g get one now because they are discontinued.

i am still undecided...should i get the 40 or 80?
i need to act quick because the 80 is discontinued

i will be using the ps3 as a gaming system and blu ray player mainly...im not even sure of other capabilities on the 80

i dont need SACD playback at all, could live w/o backwards capability, have no idea what the memory slots for SD/memorystick/compact flash are

my main concern is will i need the extra 40gb in time? (and i really dont want to upgrade the hard drive later)

any help?
