Quick question regarding 7.1 on the SC-05. When I'm playing a blu ray the receiver is set to direct and no additional processing is applied. in this scenario the back rear speakers are active even when I play a 5.1 source. This goes for both True HD and DTSHDMA (haven't tried PCM yet). Now when I watch TV I need to apply PLII to activate the rears. For blu rays am I utilizing the best possible options for 7.1? Should I apply any processing? is PLII or Neo 6 applied automatically?

Which device is doing the decoding? It seems likely it's your player. Pioneers have DTS-HD Essential decoders, which duplicate the surrounds to the rears when playing 5.1 DTS sources on Blu-ray. But, I am not aware of any setting on your player that would produce a 7.1 output when the source is 5.1 Dolby or PCM. If the AVR is set to Direct, it would not be responsible for any channel expansion. But, using PLIIx or Neo:6 in the AVR would get your rears active all the time. There's no reason not to use them. Both will do a better job producing 7.1 than the channel duplication done by DTS Essential decoding.

i don't see how you can be getting 7.1 from 5.1 sources if the AVR is set to Direct and it is doing the decoding. Direct usually means no processing beyond bass management and distance adjustments. Perhaps you have engaged some other mode on the AVR?
PLIIx and Neo:6 do nothing if the source is already 7.1. So, you can engage them and still get native 7.1 from discs that have it without changing any settings. |

That suggests the AVR has a DTS Essential decoder. The fine print in manual where it lists the specs of the software will have that information. If so, that would be unfortunate as you can't use PLIIx when the output of the decoder is already 7.1.
EDIT: the 05 manual says it has a fully functional DTS-HD Master Audio decoder. So, I don't have any other ideas about why you are getting a 7.1 output. Last edited by BIslander; 06-14-2012 at 05:01 AM. |

Here's the pdf manual link, don't just read it. Understand what it is able to do & not do. Page113+114+115? Page123+124? Also if your running thx2 mode on shyte speakers you will destroy them. Last edited by GunZenBomZ; 06-16-2012 at 11:15 AM. |

When engaged, those DSPs expand stereo and 5.1 sources to the back channels and they do nothing when the source is already 7.1. You can set them and leave them. |

This particular thread is about how a specific piece of equipment operates, not about whether channel expansion should be done.
