Default Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live

Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

NEWS
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=8948

Quote:
Eagle Rock Entertainment have officially announced that they will release on Blu-ray Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live. The classic show has been fully restored and remastered from the original film and features many of Peter Gabriel's hits including "Steam", "Sledgehammer", "Don't Give Up", "In Your Eyes", "Digging In The Dirt", "Shaking The Tree" and "Solsbury Hill". Stree date is July 24th.

Secret World Live is a Grammy Award winning film and this new version allows the original film to be seen and heard in the best possible quality on Blu-ray. Filmed in Modena, Italy across two nights in November 1993 as part of Peter Gabriel's acclaimed "Secret World Live" tour in support of the "Us" album, the show is elaborately presented and choreographed with two stages joined by a narrow moving walkway. The line-up for this show featured Peter Gabriel (vocals, keyboards); Manu Katche (drums); Tony Levin (bass, vocals); David Rhodes (guitar, vocals); Jean Claude Naimro (keyboards, vocals); Paula Cole (vocals); Shankar (violin, vocals); Levon Minassian (doudouk) with guests Papa Wemba and Molokai.

A slew of great Bonus Features are also included. "Red Rain" was not included in the original film, this is now included as an extra for the first time. This version also offers Timelapse film of the complex stage set up, plus a featurette on the making of the Secret World Live film, including interviews and behind the scenes footage. Additionally, there's a newly restored photomontage slideshow to the remixed "Quiet" version of "Steam" and, finally, "The Rhythm Of The Heat" orchestral version from the New Blood: Live In London show.

Note: Blu-ray.com has reviews for the 2D and 3D Blu-ray releases of New Blood: Live In London here and here.

Tracklising:

1) Come Talk To Me
2) Steam
3) Across The River
4) Slow Marimbas
5) Shaking The Tree
6) Blood Of Eden
7) San Jacinto
8) Kiss That Frog
9) Washing Of The Water
10) Solsbury Hill
11) Digging In The Dirt
12) Sledgehammer
13) Secret World
14) Don't Give Up
15) In Your Eyes

Never seen this one, but it looks great. As always he has great musicians with him (I'm a fan of Manu Katche & Tony Levin).

Anyone seen this before (not on BD obviously)?

Hey Pat,

Yes, I have seen it. It is a great show, not only done right (performances) but also filmed very well. Also, what is exciting about this release is that there will be some bonus songs that were not included on the DVD I watched.

I'm sold then. Actually like his music quite a lot as I own pretty much everything he put out, just never thought of checking him out live after Genesis, don't ask why, I'm trying to explain it to myself right now

I picked it up today at Best Buy with an U&S coupon, and popped it in the player for a couple of songs. You should wait for a professional review, but I will tell you that, happily, grain is very much intact. Personally, I'm very happy with the PQ, and the AQ is excellent. Can't wait to have time to watch the whole thing.

Been waiting forever for this to come out on Blu-ray - I pre-ordered this one way back on May 1st from Amazon, and it'll finally be arriving here soon! Can't wait!

Between this concert and the Pink Floyd Pulse concert DVD, those are my two favorite concert videos I own on DVD - now if only they would release Pulse on Blu...

This Secret World Blu-ray will be a great way to get myself primed for September 21st - I've got two tickets for my buddy and I to see PG at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia for his "Back to Front" 25th Anniversary Tour of "So" Live...

While they were working on the Blu-ray they could have fixed a lot of sync
issues.
For example:

4:47, 4:57, 6:35, 6:59

Sometimes it's a sync issue, but at 4:47 for example audio and video are
in sync but what you hear is not what Manu Katche plays on the drums.

I haven't encountered any sync issues on the Blu as of yet. Again, though, I've only listened to about 4 songs. I can't comment on the video you posted, as it's playing a bit "glitchy" on my end.

Watch 'Shaking the Tree' at 6:35 (your Blu-ray) and focus on Manu Katche. In the video clip
I posted (which is a Blu-ray sample supposedly) video and audio are clearly out of sync.
As I mentioned...that is not a new issue. They could have fixed it for the Blu-ray release but didn't.

There has already been some flak thrown around for over-dubbing years ago. You could probably google it and find out for sure.

On a positive note, I watched it and loved it. It is definitely a very nice upgrade.
On "Across The River" I was watching for Manu's drum solo. On the DVD there was A LOT of pixelization (?) and on this Blu ray there is none.
I'm also loving the Lossless sound. It's fricken killer!
For 15 bucks, this one is a steal!

Quote:
I've been waiting for this concert to come out on DVD since the launch of the format. Hoping that it would improve on picture quality (which it does, slightly) and match, if not improve on the sound of the laserdisc were the primary reasons. Like most filmed concerts, it favors being shown on analoque displays with minimal processing. Video scaling just can't handle the lighting and color of most stage events. The picure is notabley quieter than the laserdisc version. The real bad new is that the recorded sound on this DVD is not the of same performance as either the CD or the Laserdisc (I've not heard the VHS). There is a different set of compromises from the previously mentioned versions, what's alarming and extremely disappointing is to watch one performance while hearing another. It's reverse lip syncing. What we see is an energetic live performance full of life and excitement. What we hear on the DVD is some compressed live sound way in the background with layered studio sound in the "foreground." The studio sound is of a performance with little energy at best. It's lifeless and awful. The laserdisc and pressumabley VHS versions on good gear will move the viewer to tears, or raise goosebumps, this is a mockery of the live performance it attempts to convey.
The fidelity of live performance is never the same as studio recordings. What makes live shows work is the complete performance, warts and all, if you will. The laserdisc and CD are not great from a pure fidelity standpoint, but they were "live" for the most part. The previous versions were "enhanced" with some studio gimmickry. The track:"In Your Eyes" on laserdisc being obviously rerecorded with some of the flaws evident on the DVD, only to a lesser extent. There is plenty serious compression too, but at least we got to see and hear the performance more as it happened. I had hoped the DVD would be better, I hadn't guessed it would be taken back to a studio and completely recorded over again. This is not "live" anymore.
I can only guess that Peter Gabriel is getting poor sound advice, the technical aspects of his recordings has generally gotten better over the years. There was the announcement that his catalogue was being re-released in the questionable at best SACD format which is some cause for concern for those concerned with fidelity, and now this. Where these decisions come from is an unknown, but we have no choice in the matter. We want to hear this music, so we buy them as they are. This concert is absolutley stunning. We just don't get to hear it on the DVD.
Too bad, as consumers, we aren't given a choice between the sing along audio version we have here and the sound from the actual show as two audio choices instead of the DTS/Dolby Digital options.
Make sure you know what you are buying. This is NOT live sound.
I vote with my dollars and support my favorite artists with loyalty. I can only hope this concert will be re-released someday with the performance we are seeing in the film in tact. I'll buy that one too. The show is that good.

Blu-ray.com review is up >>>

Video: 3/5
Audio: 4,5/5

Quote:
Peter Gabriel Secret World Live is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Eagle Vision (a division of Eagle Rock Entertainment) with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1. The liner notes for this release contain the following information:

The original 16mm film negatives were repaired/cleaned and scanned (at super 2K) to a file sequence for mastering and restoration. The 2K sequence is the resolution we view in cinemas, and as such, the concert is now available in high definition without comprosmise. Once scanned, the footage was digitally restored and graded (by award winning colourist Ray King) to allow fans to view the concert as never been seen before.

The one salient piece of information in that quote is 16mm. No matter how much restoration and digital tweaking is done to particular source elements, there's only so much information available in the source elements themselves, and let's face it, 16mm isn't exactly a reference quality format (even if some 16mm material pops relatively well in high definition). So fans must come to this outing with appropriate expectations. Those expectations should include foreknowledge that a lot of this concert is incredibly soft, to the point where midrange shots are little more than fuzzy blurs of color. Close-ups do reasonably well, but even those lack the level of fine object detail that we've come to expect from more recent contemporary concert footage. Colors are also decently robust and contrast is at acceptable levels, but this is certainly not going to set any videophile's heart on fire, no matter how much laudable restoration was done to get it to this condition.
Quote:
Peter Gabriel Secret World Live features both a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround mix as well as an uncompressed LPCM 2.0 stereo fold down. While fidelity is exceptional on both of these offerings, what may strike some listeners as at least a little surprising is how sparse, even spacious, these arrangements are. Much like the general performance ethos here, there's nothing that assaults the listener, no huge effects, no massed instruments, just carefully layered lines and (especially) percussion, aspects that would come to define Gabriel's increasing importance in World Music. The 5.1 mix nicely separates the players and keeps the crowd noises anchored to the rear channels, where they hardly ever intrude to the point of distraction. The mix itself is very well handled, with Gabriel's slightly raspy vocals out front, followed by Cole's ethereal contributions and then backed up by the stellar instrumentalists.
