Default Question about PS3 sound settings

I currently have my PS3 sound coming via optical to the non-HDMI receiver, set to bitstream on the PS3. Now, I know I cannot take full advantage of the uncompressed audio tracks, but here is something I was thinking of.

My TV has an optical out. If I were to set my PS3 sound settings to output via HDMI, then use optical to the receiver, would I be able to use the uncompressed tracks functionally, or would I be in the same situation I'm currently in?

yeah, dont go through the Tv.

go directly from PS3 to receiver with optical. Simply upgrade receivers down the road...at least you still get awesome surround even if not HD.
