you would need the str-dg810 or higher to get the HD audio.

Your best bet is an optical cable set to bitstream. It will still sound amazing.

Yes. Make sure you have optical chosen as your audio output on your PS3.

i did and it was still only sending 2ch. time to buy a real receiver. 1 more question please, I am using an older receiver should my PS3 be set to bit stream or LPCM for the best sound on this old unit. thanks

Bitstream. Also, did you make sure you checked everything on the PS3, like DD and DTS 5.1? If you're looking into a new receiver though, you can ask me anything you'd like.

Since price is a concern, I have to move into a used unit at this point. What is your take on the Harmon Kardon 247. Will this unit do all i need with HD audio and the PS3? I am having a hard time getting what i need down. thanks

From what I've heard, that model has had some issues with video processing and PCM processing (from PS3). I'd say go for the Onkyo 605 instead.

I don't think he's planning on upgrading, he just wants to maximize the potential of what he has, and for that, Bitstream/Optical, and he's all set.

I asked him if he wanted to upgrade and he asked me about the Harmon Kardon 247. He was also asking about its ability to process HD audio.

Before you run out and buy a new receiver (unless you really want to upgrade to HD audio) make sure you selected the Dolby Digital or DTS track and not one of the lossless tracks. Lossless is going to come through as 2ch due to the bandwidth limitations of optical.

I think he's going to get anything anytime soon. I think he's just getting some ideas for what he wants to really get.
