I re-watched Planet of the Apes (1968) and I have a couple of questions:
1. When the "scarecrows" are seen, are they facing toward the Forbidden Zone or away from the Fordbidden Zone? In other words, are the scarecrows specifically mounted to scare people from going into the Forbidden Zone, or to scare people from coming out of the Forbidden Zone into the Apes territory ? It seems to me that the scarecrows are facing the Forbidden Zone, to scare people from entering Ape territory, so the apes don't really seem to care if any humans go into the Forbidden Zone, because the humans would probably die before they could find sustainence. 2. At the end of the movie, just before we see the top of the statue of Liberty, do we have any idea of what we see that is "metal" that is shown ?? Smart Alec replys are not being sought to these queries.... If you don't know, or don't have any idea, or just don't care..... then please don't bother to reply. |

Well first of all I would like to know how was the movie? Since you re-watched the movie you must like it. But did you notice the following incident in the movie? The astronauts find a plant which they declare their first "life" seen on the planet. They are oblivious to the grassy ridge behind them, seen when they are squatting. |

The movie was good, but it was not as impressive as when I originally saw it as a 12 year old, on the big screen, in 1968.. I'll have to look for the grassy knoll/ridge, and see if there was s/t there I missed... |

I believe the scarecrows are there to keep people from entering the forbidden zone. The apes want them around to catch or wrangle up later. I figure they think the more humans are around the more for the picking. Just my theory. Not quite sure of your second question tho.

The Scarecrows are to keep the humans from eating the Apes' food. Although it didn't seem to work, since people wandered into the crops and stole food anyway.
I think the metal thing you are talking about is the girded structure of the Statue of Liberty. It was obviously exposed once the statue sustained damage. |

i think the scarecrows were for both - keep people from entering the ape city and a reminder to the apes to go no further.

So when the team gets to the water to finally take a swim, the humans come and take their stuff, tearing up various things in their supplies. But, are we too assume that the handguns in each backpack were just "thrown in to the water"? If not, where did the weapons go? The cases their supplies came in themselves would prove something. It's just hard to imagine all of those backpacks just vanished into oblivion. A thorough search of that area where the team was swimming should/would have turned up something substantial I think.
And the teams teeth. Surely one or more of the team had fillings, and that would also be unsubstantial in proving that they came from another place... And, I would assume that at least one, or more of the team would be circumcised, yet another proof that these men came from another place... But, that said, POTA is one of my favorite Sci-Fi films, and it is the -Only- one in the series that I own. Last edited by Eye Candy; 06-03-2016 at 08:02 AM. |

Yeah, there was a line cut from the movie, but that can be found in the script -- which in online if you google it -- where when the apes and Taylor are riding past the scarecrows, Cornelius says to Lucius, who'd asked why they were there, that they were there to scare the humans but also warn apes that they were entering the Forbidden Zone.
As you can see from my avatar, this is my favorite movie. Saw it first when I was an eight-year-old in 1968. It had a tremendous impact on a lot of people back then, and is, I think, a true American movie classic. As for what Taylor first sees riding down that beach? It's supposed to be the top of Liberty's torch. Taylor is supposed to see it jutting out over the top of a cliff. Freeze-frame it and you'll wonder why you couldn't tell that before. Of course, the movie being from 1968, the ruined torch top is the way it looked then, NOT how it looks now. Oh, and Eye Candy... It's fine that the original PLANET OF THE APES is the only one you own, because even with the successful reboots, the '68 classic original is still THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS! Oh, and as for flaws in the movie... all movies have flaws, even 2001: A Space Odyssey has flaws... but just for fun I'll point out another one in PLANET OF THE APES. Watch the tracking shot at the end of the movie where the crown of the Statue of Liberty is revealed -- or just look at my avatar on the left. Where's it's upraised right arm? My 12-year-old son saw the reboot trilogy first and loved it, I admit they’re good even though for our generation we already know where it’s going. He was curious about the original so we saw it yesterday, he enjoyed it but wasn’t surprised at the ending at all. Should’ve let him see the original first, it was a big twist for us back then.
