I have no idea, but I would eat a baby to have the entire series of Angel on Blu. I got rather addicted to that show, but ironically I've only seen Buffy like once or twice. And welcome to the forums!

I asked the Fox Insider about their general approach to older TV shows in his insider thread a while back, but he has never come back to answer any of the questions.

My feeling is that it's highly unlikely we'll see Buffy or Angel on Blu-ray any time soon, due to the amount of expensive work that would be needed to do it properly. The first two seasons of Buffy were shot on 16mm film anyway, and people wouldn't be impressed with how they'd look on Blu-ray, though they would still look a lot better than the bitrate-starved DVDs.

Seriously, they would need a lot of work to be able to release an even half decent HD release. The digital effects were done in shitty interlaced SD NTSC. The current DVDs you can't even get a true progressive signal from. In addition, the first two years were shot on 16mm, and are as grainy as hell.

I hate to say this, but Buffy and Angel had an incredibly loyal fanbase. More so than Star Trek.

Buffy was one of the earliest TV shows to get a DVD release, and it raked in millions for Fox. Why do you think there are so many editions? I can see this happening.

I don't mind that grain as I think it lends a bit more to the overall atmosphere of the series back in those early days.

I can't wait to see both of these going HD, even if the picture quality can't be four or five star-level.

Also as per director intent Buffy is 4x3 even if it was filmed in a Wider ratio, in widescreen you can see boom mic and camera in the frame..

These problems are very rare. The UK DVDs are 16:9 for Season 4 onwards, and most people think they look excellent. It's extremely rare that you see things at the edges that shouldn't be there, it was composed with a 16:9 safe area in mind when filming. Yes, Joss says it was shot in 4:3 and that is how it should be watched, but I've never actually heard of anyone watching the 16:9 DVDs and being unhappy with how they look.

That doesn't change the fact that any Blu-ray version will be 4:3

I seriously doubt Buffy will ever be released. Angel maybe

You are right. I remember an article, it was one of the first tv shows to sell a million copies on dvd. It definitely deserves to be released.

Only if Joss has his way. I don't see them wanting to bother with Blu-Ray unless it is widescreen. If you watch the special "Gift" montage they put as an easter egg on the 7th season of Buffy (in the US) you will see all clips including the pilot are framed to 16x9, which shows it is possible to make the show widescreen for blu-ray which is what I want no matter how well the PQ can be. Watching the show stretched now stinks for me.

"Blu Ray is the best way to see the artists intention on film."

Why then would it be widescreen if the directors intent for the film was 4x3?

And why is anyone even thinking it'll come to Blu? It won't...ever.

From a technological perspective, does Blu-ray support having a single 16:9 encode on a disc with an option to black out the edges to pillarbox it to 4:3 so people can watch it however they want?

I wouldn't totally rule out those older seasons of Buffy filmed on 16mm, look at Evil Dead 2.

I'd much rather have Firefly on Blu-ray, I've watched it in HD on cable and want the discs now.

Seasons 4 and 5 of Angel were broadcast in HD. Those seasons would look very good on Blu-ray because everything was shot on film and the special effects were done at HD quality. Seasons 3-7 of Buffy was shot on 35mm film but all special effects are standard definition only and it was edited to video. Fox would have to go back to the original film elements(if they still exist) to make Buffy look good in 1080P.

I hope against hope that Fox releases this to Blu-ray. In our favor Buffy has been a huge dvd seller for them but unless there is a new Buffy feature film that comes out that Fox could tie-in a Blu-ray tv release with I won't hold my breath.
