Is this not being released by Studio Canal then? It's just that there is no mention of them in the info

They don't own the rights to this, Dracula or Mummy. Think Warner have Dracula. It was not just Studio Canal working on the restorations with Hammer, although Studio Canal were first to get some of their films released.

Since all the features are carried over to the dvds, does that mean they are HD on the actual BD? Would be kinda pointless if they were not.

I don't think they are - only the two versions of the film are listed as HD. Still, including them on the Blu-ray is pointless, as you say, and makes me worry that the bitrate/file size will suffer as a result. Also, why bother squeezing Four Sided Triangle on the Blu-ray, when it's on the DVD as well?

Does anyone have an email for Icon Entertainment? I could only find a phone # and address on their web page, and would like some explanation about the distribution of extras. To cram a full length film, three featurettes AND two TV episodes onto the Blu-ray along with the two versions of the film is only asking for compression issues, and the fact that these same extras are duplicated on the included DVDs makes the decision all the more bewildering and frustrating.

Thanks - maybe if they receive enough concerned emails, they'll drop the redundant extras from the Blu-ray and free up more space for the film itself. I doubt it though.

From the Hammer Restoration Blog:

Fear not! Will be high bit rate for both versions (1.37:1 and 1.66:1) of the HD feature!

Why not scrap the extras on the BD and do Four Sided Triangle in HD!
It would not be that much of a compression issue since its only in the 4.3
ratio.

Not sure I swallow the open frame original ratio bit. It would of been projected 1.66.1 in the UK and 185.1 in the US.
Besides there is an awful lot of extraneous headroom in the full frame of this film.

But if you can have both its great IMO. Better resolution and interesting to watch to boot.

Plus according to Hammer
Quote:
Yes, it’s full frame, but matted just off the edges for sharp mask. We also always thought the film was intended for 1.66:1 exhibition till we reviewed the entire film (4k open gate scan of I/P) open matte in a screening room. It is crystal clear, upon viewing, that the film was intended to be screened at 1.37:1. The framing is perfectly composed throughout at full frame and there are zero production artefacts in the frame at any point. Although 1.66:1 had mostly became the widescreen standard by the end of the 50s, many films in that decade were still shot with the intention that they would be exhibited at the Academy ratio

I do like that they will be releasing both versions. Especially since originally it was going to be academy only.

Yeah I find those some of the comments by Hammer a little off myself, but I do agree that its better to release both versions.

I think I'll wait for a review before I order this movie. This has compression problems written all over it. And Lionsgate is usually hit and miss with their releases.

If only the original Christopher Lee Dracula film could get the same treatment... Stupid Warner, always hogging the rights!
