Default How do you convert DTS HD/DD+ to PCM?

I have a denon 2807 and the only hi def format it plays is PCM. I heard you can convert DD plus and DTS HD to PCM. I thought it does it automatically. When I put DTS HD and press select (ps3) its says DTS not PCM 5.1. Is my reciever capable of coverting it?

How is your PS3 connected to your Denon?

What you're talking about is having the player do the decoding and then sending it as PCM to the receiver. This works when the PS3 is set to output PCM instead of bitstream.

With DTS HDMA, the player is sending the core 1.5mbps track to the receiver to decode, which is why you're seeing DTS displayed on your receiver. It's better this way anyway, since the receiver was made to decode audio signals. While the player can also serve this function, most people prefer the component whose sole function is to serve this purpose, the receiver, to do the decoding. The PS3 does not currently support decoding of DTS HDMA, which is why you'll only get the 1.5mbps core track.

Blu-ray doesn't have DD+, but I assume you're talking about TrueHD. If the PS3 is set to output PCM, the PS3 will decode the TrueHD signal and send it to the receiver as PCM, and you'll get the full lossless experience. I typically leave the PS3 on bitstream for everything except TrueHD soundtracks.

If you change the setting on the PS3 to output PCM instead of bitstream, then it will convert everything to PCM and your receiver will read it as PCM.

The PS3 DOES decode DTS HD MA. This was included in an update. Not sure which one......

There is a great sticky on this subject HERE. It includes all information on how to get the HD codecs on the PS3 (fat and slim).

Overview: The PS3 has been capable of decoding DTS-HA MA for more than 2 years now. It has been capable of decoding TrueHD and PCM since launch. Since the PS3 does not have multi-channel outputs, the only way to get the HD codes is via HDMI to a compatible receiver. The fat PS3 must have its HDMI setting set to PCM (the receiver will display Multi-channel or PCM, but press select and the display on the TV will tell you the codec). The fat PS3 cannot bitstream the HD codecs; if you set it to Bitstream over HDMI, it will only transmit the lossy cores of these codecs (DD, DTS, and PCM 2.0). The slim PS3 can have this setting set to either PCM or Bitstream (if you bitstream, the receiver will tell you the codec; if you PCM, it will have the same result as the fat PS3).

I bet the OP knows this now tho... this thread is over 2 years old... looks like someone gets the resurrecting a dead thread award for the day
