Default For students: Links to Blu-ray sources

hi there, i'm writing a technical report for my applied science class on blu-ray, and im wondering if there are any published books or journal articals written about blu-ray, or on some of its main features, applications, or market. I have found lots of information on the internet, but i need printed material or journals to use as reference as well. Also, can anyone suggests some "experts" on blu-ray that i can contact, like someone who is involved with the development or marketing of blu-ray, so that i can contact him or her for some questions.
thanks a lot.

Default Technical Information about BD's

Hi, I'm a senior in Computer Science & Engineering at Penn State and I've chosen to write my technical writing thesis paper on Blu-Ray technology. For this paper, I am required to find technical reports and papers such as conference procedings and professional journal articles, however, I have so far been unable to find any. Could someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks a lot!

Default Financial Cost To Sony

This has maybe been covered before, and i apologise if it has but i searched the forum and couldnt find anything. I am currently doing a project on the costs and effects of Blu-ray from Sony's perspective. What i am looking to find out is how much, generally, has it cost Sony to develop this technology?

That is a question I don't think you will find the answer to because it's too complex and if they did know they wouldn't tell you. However many other companies have put big dollars into the R&D or leveraged off other technologies. Example software is based on Java (Sun Microsystems) Media Coating (TDK) Disk Format (Apple). Don't under estimate what Philips, Panasonic and many other companies have done. How to measure that lot is almost impossible. Think about the profits, though a number of companies including Sony can Sell players that will spark interest in Monitors and receivers, but Sony can also clean up with the "Software" (Movies) via Columbia Tristar and partially through MGM.

Talking Grateful for any help

Hi
I’m writing on Blu-ray/HD DVD, the political and economical factors shaping it. How is this format battle different from VHS/Beta format battle? If can refer me to any book, journal for reference purposes I’d really appreciate it.

Regards

People still can't agree on why VHS won over Betamax, so it's hard to say what lessons have been learned from that time.

Personally, I think the war that originally started mostly as Sony vs. Toshiba has moved to being a lot more about Sony vs. Microsoft and the PS3 vs. Xbox 360. Sony is betting big on HD, Blu-ray and the PS3 and if they succeed the rewards will be great. Microsoft saw what was happening and how Toshiba was in deep trouble with HD-DVD, so to make sure the PS3 doesn't completely steamroll the Xbox 360 because it supports Blu-ray they are doing everything they can to make sure that Blu-ray doesn't become the standard.

The biggest difference in approach between the two camps is the pricing strategy. While Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer and Samsung are taking a more traditional approach with premium pricing on the first products to sell to early adopters, Toshiba has reduced their margins as much as they can to try and jump start the market and sell to anyone that will buy. Many view this as a desperate move for a product that hasn't even been introduced yet, and cutting the price in half doesn't automatically double your sales. However, they didn't really have any choice as that is the only way they could differentiate themselves from Blu-ray. I'm not sure what effect this has on the early adopters which care more about quality and features than pricing, but a lot of the general public has moved from supporting Blu-ray to HD-DVD because of this (although in reality this probably changes little as they won't buy either format for a long time anyway). If Toshiba is successful with this strategy it could lead to movie studios and consumer electronics companies starting to switch sides because there's money to be made, but there's really no reason that Blu-ray can't lower their prices as well and I'm sure they will (their margins are greater).

The pricing structure of Toshiba's HD-DVD players also remind me a lot of the Xbox 360. They announce two SKUs of which one is cheaper, then they get the benefit of claiming that their product costs as much as the cheap one, but no one knows how many of each they will produce so it's possible you'll have a hard time getting the cheaper version. It will be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out

I know , I just pre-ordered the HD DVD, the cheaper one and BestBuy didn't say for sure when I would get it, just that to expect it around the 18th. I have to wonder if I will get it all in April given the number of people out there that also pre-ordered it. Do they keep a list to see who ordered it first and will those go in order they recieved them. What if Toshiba doesn't make enough to fullfill the number of pre-orders, is that something they would do? I mean it wouldn't look good for their reputation to not fullfill the orders they have already.

Well, if Toshiba wants a price war.. I hope the BDA will participate
Not good for the companies but it is for the consumer... (= us)

However, Hollywood won't like that I think... Mmm.. But wait, it doesn't affect them, right?
