NAND flash memory isn't new, been around for ages and several companies make it.

The work is increasing how much data it can store. The more bits of data each cell stores, the more unreliable and unstable it becomes, so the more ECC is needed. The work is also increasing read and write speeds. We just happened to have talked with the NAND flash suppliers about their roadmaps a few weeks ago.

But it has nothing to do with any specific format, as it doesn't care what type of data is stored on it.

At some point, it could be used instead of a disc or HDD in a player to deliver/strore content. GPS navigation units already moved from HDD to flash memory.

Or Not NOR depending on your viewpoint.

NOR flash is an older, less dense, flash memory technology. Now costs more than NAND flash, but supports random access and is more reliable.

Or Not NOR, gah, that makes my head hurt a little too early for me I fear . Or Not not or.

Still odd, but I think largely it has to do with cost issues [especially relative to DRAM but] that the SSDs went the route of NAND instead of NOR.
