Default Clip-on intercooler for PS3

I have been using a small fan for my PS3..that seemed to help with the freezing/pausing problem. Now that Nyko is coming with this intercooler attachment...I think i will pick one up as soon as it hits the market.

It was suppose to hit the market in January, but has been delayed several times, the latest release date is April 15th, so we will see....

Interesting. The PS/3 outputs air on the right side/top and this is attached to the rear of the unit. So, is it an air PUSHER?

Thanks for the heads-up. I have noticed the PS3 runs very hot. Haven't experienced any freezing/pausing problems, but with record high temps here and summer just around the corner I will definitely pick up one of these attachments. Hope it is available soon.

If you open up the PDF on the site...a bigger image is there. This cooler looks like a tray..the whole PS3 will just fit tightly inside this cooler. 5 fans with customized speed control? That is cool.

Yes, you're right. It goes over the right/top outlet too. It's such a clean fit it wasn't obvious from the small pic.

It does look cool. I wonder how quiet it would be, and whether it would only push a lot when it needs to.

If you scroll to the bottom of that PDF, it refers to a single, inner and master version with 1, 5 and 20 fans, respectively. The 5-fan version weighs almost 9 lbs and the 20-fan version weighs almost 40 lbs! This will significantly change the PS3...or am I reading the PDF wrong.

It's always 76 to 78 degrees in my house during the summer so high temps outside don't factor at all for me. My PS3 is never overheating, I feel hot air blowing out of the fan which is normal.

Anyhow...i looked it up...the Nyko will run $29.99.
And i have also found another version of cooler for the PS3 made by Pelican...couldn't find any specs on it, but GameStop will have it in tomorrow for $39.99.

The shift to 65nm process for the hardware components is by itself already enough to reduce heat and noise.

This fan is not needed at all (unless you own a PS3 that has 90nm parts in it)

How do you know what size your parts are?

Do you mean 360? I haven't heard anything about the PS3 changing specs like that, but the 360 supposedly is.

I've never had a cooling problem with any video game system that I've had. Maybe I'm just lucky.

be aware that some intercooling fans void warranties. For example there was a fan for the 360 that would melt at the power source and become essentially glued to the sysem. plus they take power away from the system...

Default warranty worries

I called gamestop and the guy on the line told me that the ps3 and xbox both have parts that will be damaged or altered to prove a cooler was used. they also said that the 2 companies that make the coolers, nyko and pellican, don't make a very good quality product.

i'm interested if a usb powered laptop cooler would make a difference. they just sit underneath the device leaving no marks. plus it could run off the usb ports on the ps3. has anyone tried that or could they?

Not to offend anyone that uses a cooling fan, but how can you run into heating problems. Unless you block the vents, I don't see how you can have a heating problem.

Ok, guess I set myself up for that.

Seriously, when you guys run your PS3 for games or BD, put your hand on the top of the chassis near the rear right-hand side and tell me that's not hot. You could easily fry an egg on the cell processor. Runs hot as hell.

Perhaps one of those notebook coolpads should work.
