Toshiba HD-DVD Player: $364 At Amazon
The company's new high-def player also comes with five free HD-DVDs.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (March 15, 2007) -- Toshiba's new HD-A2 HD-DVD player is now available for $364.99 at Amazon.com.

The company's second-generation HD-DVD player, which was launched last October, has a suggested retail price of $499. Amazon.com last December was selling the set-top for $452, but has now lowered the price again.

Toshiba's HD-DVD format is battling with the Sony-supported Blu-ray format for the new high-def DVD audience.

Toshiba now is also offering five free HD-DVD movies for the purchase of any Toshiba HD-DVD player. The list of available titles includes: Apollo 13, Four Brothers, Casablanca, The Perfect Storm and We Were Soldiers.

The funniest thing about this, is that when they started the 3-free promotion in October, people are just starting to get their discs now. Five months later! It took Panasonic less than a week to get me my free discs. I wonder how long it will take these people.

And have you seen the way they make you choose? You have to select one disc from five groupings - each grouping with 3 choices. So if you don't want/need any of the discs in a grouping, too bad.

That's fair. I will swap any 5 HD-DVD titles for 1 Casino Royale (given with the PS3, PAL only). I wonder how many HD-DVD players will go to a Blu-ray or non HD house vs to a home where there is already a HD-DVD player?

Looks like somebody is getting desparate to sell their product. Only uninformed people will buy into that. If you can't get your favorite movies then whats the point?

This from the camp that claims the only reason BD is selling more is due to some of the sales that have gone on. Meanwhile the three free HD-DVDs moves up to five.

If they throw in an all-expenses paid 2-week trip to the Bahamas, I'm all over it.

Personally I am waiting for Toshiba to offer their high end player that includes the entire HD DVD catalog for $299 before I splurge. This is what obsolete equipment is worth.

Wow, they can't give this @#$% away, it seems.

Essentially, that's what they're doing at this rate.

How long can Toshiba continue this kind of madness? They certainly can't be making any kind of real profit or money and I can't imagine their stockholders (God help these people) being happy about any of this.

I really hope those delusional HD-DVDer's don't try to spin this as a positive. This is a major sign of desperation.
