Finland Finland the most un-failed state in the world 2012 !

check out : The Failed States Index 2012 @

http://www.fundforpeace.org/global/?q=fsi-grid2012

Finland

"Upon first glance, it could be easy to assume that there is very little new to be found in the 2012 Failed States Index. After all, Finland has managed to win back-to-back best-place on the Index and Somalia now has the ignominious distinction of five-straight worst-place finishes. Nine of the worst ten in 2012 are the same as in 2011; meanwhile, the “best ten” at the sustainable end of the index are the same ten countries as in 2011. So, nothing has really changed, right?

Wrong.

Though a quick glance of the 2012 Failed States Index could suggest business as usual, the Index actually saw some of the most dramatic shifts in the eight-year history of the Index, which was first published in 2005. In those eight years, three of the four most significant “worsenings” occurred in 2012. Prior to this year’s Index, the most significant decline had been Lebanon in 2007 – which worsened by 11.9 points – coinciding with the conflict with neighboring Israel. This year, two countries managed to beat that record, and both for very different reasons."

Heh, according to that index, Myanmar (Burma) is one point worse than North Korea. I'd think given the reforms in Burma that it wouldn't be that high up.

Alright, alright. I'll take your word for it

Notice they left out the Republic of China (aka Taiwan) and some other countries, I suppose they're going by UN membership.

I don't really know what this list is for, but Canada is ninth. We should be higher but we'll take it!

It would be nice to know what the criteria used for this was, although I'm not necessarily doubting the ranking.

The Scandinavian countries (Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway), the Benelux countries (The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg), Canada, New Zealand and Australia traditionally rank in the Top.

So given that...what is it that those countries have in common?

I'm afraid that answering that would take us too far into the realm of political discussion.

Being a proud Canadian, I can't imagine anywhere else on Earth I'd rather live. The list is an interesting read but the "Red Leaf" will always be #1 here.

A truthful and accurate answer would earn a permaban.

What do the countries at the bottom of the list have in common?

There are two very clear indicators of success and failure as a country and neither is acceptable for discussion on this site or out in the open.

Ah, I knew we had a connection. My dad came over from Belfast in the 50's. Unlike the Canadian standard, I'm not much into beer anymore, but I can stand whiskey very well. Had a great teacher

P.S. my dad made the best potato pancakes ever. I've tried and got pretty close, but there's something missing that he brought to the grave. I can still taste them
