Default What does BD-50 mean?

In the press release for the Juno film it says "Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Academy Award nominated comedy 'Juno' to Blu-ray on April 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented as 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on a BD-50".

What do they mean when they say "...on a BD-50"?

blu-ray movies are released in one of two options...
a 25GB single layer disk or a 50GB dual layer...

a 25GB has lower replication costs and was the original Blu-ray disc...so many of the first releases were 25GB.

with the introduction of the 50GB disc, studios can now opt for a better encoding of the movie and offer various audio choices on the disc.

There are 25gb discs and 50gb discs. Most movies now come on BD50's . . . some earlier titles (and a few new titles) come on BD25's.

50 gigs is standard size for a Dual Layered Blu-Ray, 25 gigs is the standard size for a single layered Blu-Ray.

Yep. A single layer Blu-ray Disc (BD25) can store up to 25 GB of data. The dual layer BD50 can store up to 50 GB of data.

Whatever happened to the 100 Gigabyte Blu-Ray disc?

What is a pipe dream?

We will need it when 10.2 surround sound comes out.

A pipe dream is basically wishful thinking

BD-100 will almost certainly never see the light of day on a commercially pressed disc

You will still see titles released on BD25 discs, there are plenty of titles that will utilize this.

The BBC discs with Dolby 5.1 will have them, Vacancy from Sony was only 80-something minutes long, so it was on one, etc., etc.

Not much point releasing on a BD50 if what you're releasing comes in under the BD25 mark.

Sorry, was hoping to flush the Apostle Lee out. You know he's lurking.

By the time that comes out, all the good movies will have been released. I highly doubt they're gonna re-master everything just to get that extra 40 gb worth of quality. It cost too much...
