![]() ![]() Hoosiers 25th Anniversary Blu-ray June 5, 2012 news https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=8360 ![]() Hoosiers Blu-ray Hoosiers Blu-ray Review I love Hoosiers,my favorite sports film. The blu-ray version is very disappointing. The movie is filled with annoying grain that distracts from enjoying the movie. The standard DVD is better-what was Fox thinking? DVD doesn't preserve grain like a high def medium can. It's lost right alongside resolution, which the BD surpasses by a good margin. The film elements are a bit old and have possibly deteriorated some. I'm sure it could be much improved if given the effort that Lucas put behind SW and Indiana. But, I wouldn't count on that happening for a long time. Overall, the BD impressed me more than I expected. It's a farcry from what Fox did for Planet of the Apes in both detail and dynamic. I'd give it an edge on Broken Arrow and a few others too, especially considering the film's age.

I can't find it anywhere, and have looked at all four of my Best Buys, all five of my Targets, my Circuit City, and both my Wal Marts! Has anyone seen it in any of these stores? I guess I'll just have to get it off Amazon.
On another note, has anyone SEEN Hoosiers on BD? I know it isn't gonna be top notch PQ, but I can't wait to see it in HD no matter what. |

Damn it, why don't the studios ever mention if it's a new transfer in these releases, instead of letting us wonder. I suppose that there's a good chance that it is a new transfer with the recent The French Connection and Wall Street releases.

Video: “Hoosiers” has always looked a little dark, soft, and grainy, but this new transfer is a marked improvement. Some scenes still look a little soft, but overall there’s a lot less grain-with-noise than we got in the last transfer. When the championship game erupts in a burst of color, you begin to see that the dingy palette may indeed have been forced on the filmmakers by Mother Nature, who rained 36 of 39 shooting days, we learn in the commentary. I can’t say that there’s more depth of field, but there is far less grain and fewer “soft” scenes. Even though there are still problems, for me it’s a no-brainer to upgrade. “Hoosiers” is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. http://moviemet.com/review/hoosiers-...dition-blu-ray |

Unfortunately, this thread was restored to the mid-April 2012 version, as a result of a notorious database loss on the site. That's why the title was old. |

I watched this last night having purchased it for $4 on Black Friday.
Looks fairly film-like; natural color and solid contrast with grain well retained. The only issue I have with it is some edge enhancement in some of the outdoor scenes, but pretty solid for a catalog title. Good movie and Gene Hackman performance. The documentary about the 1954 Milans which the movie is loosely based off is rather interesting too. |

I just finished watching this 25th Anniversary Blu-ray of Hoosiers.
(2016 is actually the 30th Anniversary of this film, so here's our cue to feel really really old.) The last time that I saw this movie was when I rented it on videotape circa 1987. I remembered liking it a lot, so I decided on a revisit when I spotted this Blu-ray for five dollars at a local used store. It really is an incredible sports flick. This Gene Hackman movie was a follow-up to my viewing of the Criterion Blu-ray of Downhill Racer last night. Hoosiers is definitely the more emotionally cathartic "underdog hits the big time" film, although I love both of these movies. The Blu-ray looks good to me, especially since my only previous exposure to the film was by way of a pan-and-scan VHS tape. In all seriousness, though, I don't think that anyone will be disappointed by this disc as long as they are not expecting a brilliant frame-by-frame restoration. Great movie, great disc. I'm really glad that I decided to pick this one up. |

It's a great transfer, much better than the earlier Blu-Ray. Also worth it for the original stereo soundtrack which I believe is just plain Dolby Digital but is so much better than the DTS MA 5.1 track. That track is the DVD remix which has tinny dialogue and muffled sound -- and has sounded that way ever since MGM inherited the property and put out that 5.1 track on DVD. Even if it's lossy the Dolby Digital stereo (theatrical) mix is much superior IMO. Not sure but I don't believe the earlier Blu had it available as an option.
