Tell me, oh masters of blu-ray, why is the BBC (UK) version of Planet Earth generally regarded as "better" than the Discovery Channel (USA) version? Please enlighten me. Thanks.

BBC is 1080p
Discovery Channel is 1080i

That's the only difference I believe.

I got the BBC one and the blacks on all of the discs were messed up... not sure how to explain it aside from distortion?? It had like white static within the blacks. Don't know if it was just mine or not though. So I ended up getting the Discovery version, still not as good on the colorful sceneds, but the blacks are much better. And I liked listening to Sigourney Weaver better than whoever the British guy is.

I didn't know when I got it that it was only 1080i though, I may have tried a second BBC one had I known.

Im going to order this as i type, but i gotta know, which version is best? From what i read before the US edition is 1080P while the UK edition is 1080i, is this wrong? US 4 disc, and UK 5 disc, and i am talking about the series, not the new edition by discovery or whatever...pls enlighten me.

This gets a bit confusing. There is a British version of Planet Earth, narrated by Sir David Attenborough released in the U.S. A different version of this BD set is offered in the U.K., but it features five discs. To make matters more confusing, a U.S. version, narrated by Sigourney Weaver, is also available. They are easily distinguishable by looking at the back cover of the slipcase. The one to get, IMO, is the four-BD British version released domestically, featuring David Attenborough.

Gremal: Can u link me to a shop that sells this four disc UK version, cause i only find the 5-disc. Or is the 4 disc US version the one u mean? or go to www.axelmusic.com and search for planet earth, and check if thats the one i should get....

do a search on the phrase Planet Earth on Blu-ray movies.

This is the info I've seem to have picked up:

1- UK released BBC 5 disc Attenbourg narration 1080p24? in 4 program discs, 1080i60? on supplement disc (Unconfirmed by me)edit: look to the next post for Gremal's input on this
2- US released BBC 4 disc Attenbourg narration 1080p24
3- US released Discovery 4 disc Weaver narration 1080i60 (maybe standards converted from UK 50i rate to US 60i rate? Unconfirmed by me)

As 50i/25p runs 4% faster than 60i3:2/24p that might account for some length's differences. (The PAL Planet Earth DVD programs are 4% shorter/faster than the the same US BBC Planet Earth BD programs but they have the same content)


If you keep this up you're gonna make me buy the UK BBC and US Discovery version to confirm it myself!

If you go to amazon.co.uk, you can see the difference between the two. If you want to purchase the US release of the British version, that's easy. Just go to your local Best Buy or other retailer of your choice, look on the back cover of the slipcase and it will tell you who the narrator is.

Deci, people in the UK are claiming that their 5 disc set is 1080p, except the bonus disc.

I did like her narrating it but I grew up listening to his voice and that's just I perfer. If they would have only released the Sigourney version, I would had picked that up because that's what they showed on TV here and LOVED the series. To each their own though
