Default Death of a format: The grief process.

We all go through several stages of grief when faced with a death. Even for the death of a beloved format like HD DVD.

All the articles that have been coming out saying:

" Blu-ray's victory doesn't matter because downloads will soon be here."

or

"To hell with Sony. I'll never buy their product. Sony = Evil"

or

" The consumer didn't choose, The studios did, boycott Blu-ray."

or even the few

" HD DVD will still be around 10 years from now! Blu-ray could still die!"

All of these fall into one of the stages of grief. Eventually they will come to the final stage, acceptance.

We just have to wait it out! Grieving takes time.

Until then, all we can say to them is "there, there. This too shall pass."...

...and be glad it is them, not us, going through it.

Hey, If HD-DVD were to win, I'd do the same... except for the acceptance part.
Downloads all the way if it werent for BD. I mean, come on... Its free.
That was a hint at some possibly non-legal activities. Notice how i diddnt say illegal? That makes me sound less ban-worthy...

Actually, the HD Stages of Grief joke was covered in its own thread last May (and without the Swim-boy Tube-pimping), but unfortunately never went into details past the concept--

Updated to Post-War:
- Denial: "Well, if you don't count the PS3's, there's not really a working Blu-ray player on the market!--It's bound to fail eventually!"

- Anger: "Hah, all you little loyal Sony fan-babies had to get yer bottle, huh?...Want the whole industry your own way! Just see if I ever use another evil-Sony-overlord product again!"

- Bargaining: "I don't see why a future of Blu disks and HD downloads can't co-exist, until the downloads eventually take over..."

- Depression: "Fine, enjoy it...I don't need hi-definition anyway! Nobody can tell the difference, and I'm just as happy with my upconverting DVD!"

- Acceptance:
...
...
...

(...Oh, COME now!)

I myself am happy HD-DVD is "dead", it means I will be able to buy around 400 titles that are exact same on Blu, but at maybe half, or a third of the price of the Blu one (I own both players). When I'm unsure of the PQ, I get the HD-DVD first to check, in case of ugly looking discs, it's less money wasted.

For anyone to go through grief for the loss of a format and compare it to the loss of a loved one needs help.

It might be "tasteless" if it didn't also happen to be TRUE:
(No less psychiatric than anyone who considers a home-theater format a "loved one", and reacts with personal injury when its corporation won't sell it anymore.)

As it is, go back and check out that linked "Death-Ray" article from the other threads, and count off the author's real-life stages to your heart's content--
We're just callin' 'em as we see 'em.

Watch this vid, it shows what all HD DVDers should do when their format kicks the bucket.
