Default Upgrading Onkyo Reciever?

I have the reciever included with the Onkyo HT-SR800 and, as you may know, lacks true HDMI inputs(audio decoding) and is just a passthrough. I've been wanting to upgrade to true HD sound but don't want to get rid of the bundled speakers with my SR800. I'd like to upgrade to the Onkyo TX-605 or TX-705 and am wondering if you think Onkyo would swap recievers without paying full price of the reciever. Do you think that this would be reasonable?

most likely you'll have to sell your receiver and buy whichever receiver you're interested in. How long ago did you buy the 800?

Around late December. I'd prefer to stick with Onkyo unless you can show me a better Denon 7.1 reciever with HDMI inputs for cheap...

Stick with Onkyo their receivers are fantastic especially for the cheap price.

I don't think Onkyo will do buy backs, you'll have to ebay it or something and then put the money towards a new one. You definitely won't get the full worth back but you should get some.

I personally think the Onkyo reciever works best for me. If you show me a better reciever, then I'll consider a Denon. Otherwise, I wouldn't see a reasonable doubt for getting an Onkyo. I just bought a HTIB that came with a subpar reciever that still works for normal use. I'd just prefer to have True HD audio that's all.

The best bang for your buck is the Onkyo. If I were getting a true Home theater (real one) setup, I'd get a Denon or Marantz, but I'm YEARS away from that. I'm still in the living room Home theater stage, and the 605 is great for that purpose.

What is your BD player?

^If I wanted to spend that money I'd much rather a pre-pro setup with an Onkyo. Put the extra money towards the amp.
Pre-pro system >>>> Denon receiver.

That just shows how far away I really am from that type of setup!

Absolutely. I think Onkyo is a great brand. I might call up Onkyo and see what they have to offer me soon. But, I don't know. Maybe someone knows if they will exchange the reciever to upgrade. If I tell them I will be a future loyal customer, maybe they'll consider it more.

I have a Playstation 3. I know all about the decoding of the Playstation 3 too. I'm not in a massive room setup or anything but I have a great setup as is. As I said, I'd just like to get HD sound.

Like i said u get what u pay for. I do think Denon is a better quality product over Onkyo. To me the Onkyo loses SQ when put at high volume. Thats just what i noticed though.

I wouldn't blame sound quality loss on the Onkyo. The speaker wires provided on the speakers provided on the SR800 are probably Dollar Tree quality. I purchased 14 guage speaker wire and the differences paid off completely 100%. The equalizer settings also have a big impact on sound quality. I can turn it up to around 60 and get virtually no audible distortion. I don't believe that saying it sounds bad a high volumes makes much sense.

P.S.
Don't believe what you hear from the display systems at stores!

Possibly, but I said a pre-pro system which will always outperform a Denon receiver. I've never heard quality loss from my Onkyo at high volumes. Which model and speakers were you using? (The amp in the 805 is a lot higher quality then the 605 or 705)

Well, I'm not using "impressive" speakers but they sure beat the speakers provided. I'm using 1970's Technics speakers for the front, 1980's Realistic speakers for the surround and the provided center and back surrounds for the time being. It sure sounds quite impressive. I've heard the Lifestyle 48 system from Bose and my setup, quite frankly, sounds just as good or even better than the $4000 Bose system, which sounds rediculous. But I can tell you it sounds crisp and realistic just as if I were in the theater. I like to watch Twister to show it off. I ordered Twister on Bluray and would love to hear it in HD. That would hands down be a heart stopping experience. It also helps(not really) when your setup is in a small bedroom.

The more and more I think about this, the more I want to upgrade. What Onkyo reciever should I look at? I am trying to keep it cheap but get the best I can, if that makes sense. I am considering this a lot. Thanks.

Uh...Good question. I was trying to spend less than $400. If I could trade in just my reciever now, I'd save money.
