Default Toshiba not so impressed by Blu-ray's victory cries

http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/03/19...victory-cries/

I really enjoy this coming from the company that is giving away 5 free movies with each player.

Regarding the claim of 200,000 vs. 30,000 standalone BluRay players, where are they getting this? I thought standalone player sales were VERY close? There's not a 3rd party source like video scan for hardware is there? At any rate the sales #s should be telling them that the 2million ps3 owners are indeed buying and watching a few BluRay movies.

Toshiba are dreaming they forgot to include PS3 as if PS3 is made only for gaming and as if it is a gadget sooner or later we through it unbelievable assumption.Anyway BD is outselling HD-DVD because of PS3,2 million PS3 owned by Blu-ray FANS unbelievable too,Hey Toshiba if Blu-ray player is not selling well the disadvantage for this is the higher price.Wait till summer and then make your assemption if you are impressed or not when i will buy a blu-ray player ,,,,now i have a PS3 and i'm using it only for Blu-ray Playback..this is only one example related to me who is using blu-ray around the world for BD playback

Enjoy it Toshiba

If current trends continue, what will the FUD and misinformation turn to in the coming months? Its like the Black Knight skit in Monty Python/Holy Grail. HD-DVD is sitting on the ground with arms and legs cut off calling BD a coward and threatening to bite its legs etc.

If current trends continue of course.

He also notes that Toshiba has sold 200,000 HD DVD players in the US, in comparison to the 30,000 standalone Blu-ray players sold, and that it's not clear yet how many Blu-ray movies the two million PS3 owners are going to be watching. Olivier also promised that Toshiba will undercut Sony prices every step of the way, and made it clear that while HD players account for less than 1% of DVD player sales, it's way too early to call the war for either side.
OK, let's take Toshiba's BS as gospel:

- 200K HD DVD players
- 30K BD players + 1 million PS/3
- 2:1 disc sales advantage for BD over HD DVD.
- Assume BD and HD DVD stand-alone owners buy the same number of discs, so that means the equivalent stand-alone usage from the PS/3 must result in 2x equivalent BD players in use:

(1000x + 30)/200 = 2

Where x is a stand-alone equivalence factor for the PS/3.

x = 0.37 (i.e. 370K equivalent BD players are coming from the PS/3)/

Does Toshiba really want the PS/3 effect to be considered at 0.37 times PS/3 sales? Shouldn't they be downplaying the PS/3 effect?

The reality is that somehow HD DVD has gone from 80K to 200K player sales in 10 weeks. And BD has has somehow gone DOWN.

Neat trick.

Something like this but for HD-DVD.

I wish there was a videoscan equivalent of the hardware sales so people could stop saying its all PS3s. Also I just realized that haven't some 40,000 xbox360 hd-dvd add-ons have been sold? Is that being counted as part of the 200,000?

Anyway this is all BS if the sales trends keep continuing it will be harder and harder to make up nonsense.

"Blu-Ray has only sold 11 stand alone players and none of the 100 PS3 owners are buying movies and the only reason they are outselling us 3:1 is due to Eleventeen-brazillian $10 off coupons! Also the videoscan data LIES!"

Toshiba is just taking lessons from the(ir) master, Microsoft.

And how come my PS3 came with no free vouchers? $10 off does not equal free, last I checked.

It's a pathetic claim. The number "200,000" is including all HD DVD related devices, not only Toshiba stand-alone players but also Xbox360 add-on drive, any form of PC HD DVD-ROM drives. And Toshiba fairly counted *ONLY* BD stand-alone players, of course excluding PS3, BD drives and PCs come with BD burner .

We seem to have misinformation countered with misinformation here. The question now is, which party is worse, the one who originally spread the misinformation or the one that countered with misinformation. My money is on the latter.

112K add-ons had sold in North America as of the end of January.

Nov: 42K
Dec: 50K
Jan: 20K

Presumably NPD released the Feb. number for the add-on, but like last month it wasn't widely reported.

I think I remember seeing that NPD would only do HD add on sales quarterly from January. It could be the reason why we haven't seen any reports on the numbers. That, or they are very terrible and MS has suppressed them.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter.

Additionally I wouldn't be surprised if it was some how spun as a positive for Microsoft and a negative to Sony by all of the fanboys though.

That is an easy spin:

[fanboi mode]It seems clear from the underwhelming Xbox addon numbers that gamers aren't interested in HD movies so Sony wasted all that money/time on putting BD into the PS3. MS clearly thought ahead and now have the best gamisng system ever made etc...[/fanboi mode]

Fanbois are too simple.
