Default Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Officially Discontinued

Official statement:

As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD. Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market. As we stated earlier, we do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own.

And if you keep having to remind people that this does not effect 360 as a gamng platform, then that means deep down you know it is gonna have some type of impact........i mean come on, how many times are you going to repeat yourself.

I think I remember reading somewhere Bill Gates being 100% behind HD DVD. Now that they've gone ahead and discounted this driver, I wonder if now they'll make a Blu-Ray version of the XBOX.

Yep...the whole format war was a humming and hawing for lots of people that still haven't decided. Now it's not. Given this HD failure combined with the DVD disk space problems starting to appear, no lossless 7.1 sound or blu-tooth and that xbox 1.5 designation is looking more accurate than not in comparison to the PS3. It's rapidly becoming last generation faster than MS hoped for sure and that is a big problem for them. Big problem and your original point is right on - they know it.

But this is www.blu-ray.com so more PS3 players for games and movies is all good from that perspective. Means faster adoption all around.

Nice to see this from M$...buncha losers with that 360 add on. Anyways, the PS3 is now outselling the 360 in the US and worldwide.

I hope there's no BLU player for the 360. That's crap. Let them eat HD DVD pie or nothing.

Gee, last year everyone (but us) smashed the PS3 and gave little respect to the power of Blu-ray. The year turns and now it's bandwagon city.

That's because we actually did our homework and waded thru the bull that other people were swallowing hook line and sinker because it came from "experts" and "pundits" .. many who actually don't know their $ss from a hole in the ground.

Think.

I hope BDA does not license Blu-ray to Microsoft. If Xbox 360 gets a BD drive this can slow PS3 sales, considering more people have Xbox 360, about 15 million sold. Then people would buy the affordable, yet crippled, Xbox 360 add-on instead of the PS3 and the other high priced BD players, however this can increase Blu-ray hardware and software sales overall… well I do have a PS3 in the living room and an Xbox 360 in my bedroom… But then again I have the crippled, non HDMI, Xbox 360.

im still amazed that there are others out there that think/thought that HD-DUD would live on as a gaming option. I get tired of reminding these idiots that the disc that MS uses for gaming is not red :P now with this news I sure hope they just shut the heck up!
its over folks, nothing to see here....

Not too shocked to hear this considering that no one supports this format anymore. In the Barnes and Nobles store I was in today, they said they are returning their stock of HD-DVDs to the warehouse.
