Ok, I need advice...
So, I'm not quite sure what to do with my DVD collection. I have about 60 DVDs, and I know I'm going to end up replacing a few with blu (pulp fiction, fight club, matrix). That's making me lean towards selling my DVDs on ebay when I can still fetch a decent price for my collection. However, there are a number of movies I want to own...that are much less popular movies. Titles like these: A Bronx Tale The Sandlot Brick Mousehunt Last Action Hero Sphere Saving Silverman The Thomas Crown Affair The Rainmaker What are the odds of seeing some of these titles get blu treatment within the next few years? Mousehunt, for example, is a great kids movie...very funny. But honestly, I can't see Mousehunt coming out on Blu-ray in the next 3-5 years...if ever! What do you guys think? Is it going to be years before we see less popular movies get the blu treatment? I want to buy most of those movies on DVD, but I'm not sure if that's the best idea now that blu-ray has become the dominant HD format. Last edited by havoc752; 02-24-2008 at 09:48 PM. |

With regards to The Thomas Crown Affair, I believe that the remake has more chance of appearing than the original. That said, it was announced with Dances With Wolves and a few others by Fox, yet were yanked off the schedules. Last Action Hero Has a good chance I believe. Action movies sell, regardless of this one being a satire of the genre. I think it finally found its audience.

If you would truly enjoy those movies in SD, go for it. Then someday when they're released on Blu-ray, you can sell or donate the DVD. Most of them probably won't be Blu too soon, IMHO, so $7 for a DVD you'll enjoy for about 2 years isn't bad. We're movie fans first, Blu-ray fans second...verrrrrrry close second though!

That's a good point...I can pick up most of those titles for less than $10. I just hate having to buy a movie twice

When a Blu-Ray edition of a movie you have is announced, and you know that it has all the bonus features and good PQ and AQ, then you sell and re-buy. Until then, hold onto your DVD's. I know that it'll take a long time for the majority of my DVD's to go Blu, and there are a few I'm certain never will.
So don't let go of your prized DVD's just yet. |

I would wait until you hear about a particluar movie coming out in Blu THEN sell the standard DVD version of that movie. I did this for First Blood, the first two Pirate movies, Hollowman, Predator, and the first 3 Die-Hards.
The titles that look like they will not appear in Blu for a awhile, hang on to those. We usually get plenty of notices here as to when a movie is coming out. Just plan ahead. |

Most of my favorite films are not on Blu-ray yet. I'm keeping the DVDs until I get my hands on the Blu-ray version. Then I'll give away the DVD version. (IMO with the effort of advertising online, keeping correspondence, shipping etc. it's not worth selling the DVDs.)

Do you go on trips? Driving or Plane? Well if so, then dont sell the ones you enjoy to watch multiple times so you can watch on a portable dvd player

I would hang onto these titles until a BD release date draws near. If you get rid of a certain movie without a blu replacement, you may regret not having the film to watch.

I have a collection (or had) of about 200 DVDs. Back in December I liquidated all the ones that had either already been released in Blu-ray or I could live without until that eventual day when they do come out on Blu-ray. I still have about 40 DVDs that I couldn't give up in the meantime either because they're unknown films or films like Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Fight Club, Seven, etc.
As was mentioned the advantage to keeping the standard DVDs is that some titles have not been released, or even announced yet. And for travel. Since I use my PS3 it's not exactly portable... and I can't put those movies in my laptop. |
