No, I enjoyed blu-ray's perfectly well when I had a 720p/1080i TV. Obviously, 1080p is slightly better but its not essential.

Well, you could watch BD on ANY TV technically. Even 480i. ALthough why you would do that, I have no idea. 720p/1080i are still a big enough improvement to warrant having a BD player.

If you have a flatscreen, your TV is 720p, and you should set it to that. Your TV accepts 1080i, but then downconverts to 720

1080i is plenty good.. Especially if you have a smaller tv in the 30-40 inch range it's sometimes hard to tell the difference. I watch all my movies on a 1080i setup although i can also set the tv to 720p.. 1080i looks a bit sharper. I'm sure someday I will upgrade, probably to a projector, but for now bluray packs quite a punch on my 1080i setup.

The real upgrade is whether your 1080i tv excepts component or HDMI...

I find my 57 inch 1080i set looks better than my 1080p 42 inch set honestly so I would say it doesn't really matter.

Also, many claim that Pioneer 720p knocks any 1080p set out of the water for image quality.

I wouldn't loose any sleep over having a 720p or 1080i set.

If you enjoy TV shows in HD on your current TV, you will enjoy it more with BD. You don't need a new TV if it's working perfectly now.
