Target Target damaging product with "spider-wrap" and "plastic coffins"

This is a continuation of the discussion that started in the Target -- Marvel's The Avengers 3D Combo Pack with Bonus Disc for $19.99 thread.

While it's not a new practice, many Targets are damaging their Avengers Exclusive slip-covers in the "plastic coffin" security cases that are too small to hold them. Testimonials and pics have been provided to show how the slips are forced into these security cases, ultimately damaging them. This lead to an side-discussion of Target's pattern of damaging Blu-ray packaging, including larger/TV set edges being dented in "spider-wrap." It was suggested that a new thread be started here...

I stopped by one of my Targets (Ypsi, MI) this morning and saw several examples, listed below in spoiler form. I've also seen this practice at the Ann Arbor location:

[Show spoiler]
- Tops of two Disney slip-covers destroyed by plastic coffins.

[Show spoiler]
- Spider-wrap dents Harry Potter on all sides.

[Show spoiler]
- Spider-wrap dents Jason Bourne on all sides.

[Show spoiler]
- Spider-wrap dents Game of Thrones on top.

Per blu-ray_girl_fan's suggestion: Let's keep posts to one-per-user, and just update our posts when we find more examples. This will keep the thread relevant, and useful to new readers. Thanks!

Might I suggest one post per person? That way, we can keep the thread to a manageable length. We can just keep editing our single post as we add pictures and stuff.

I'll come back and re-link to some of my pictures from other threads...

By the way, I hope my participation in this thread convinces other forum members that I don't work for Target.

Borders (before they went under) was also bad about over-tightening the spider-wrap on expensive hardcover books. I had a discussion with their manager about how they were never going to sell a $100 graphic novel with damage like that... I told them they actually would be better off letting it get stolen and being reimbursed by insurance... because that damage wouldn't be self-inflicted!

Shocked that it took this long for this to get its own thread.
For years I won't buy blu-ray at target because I won buy product that's been destroyed by the coffins.

Hope they listen.

I'm pretty sure the thread was already done before. It probably got deleted during the site's data loss.

If memory serves me correctly I believe Shin started it.

I don't have any pictures, but my local Target had two Bond 50 Blu-ray sets destroyed by spider-wraps. At $170 a set, I even told the clerk "good luck" selling those with that damage.

But, were they applied so tight as to crush/dent the sides of the packaging?

This issue has been covered in a thread before. Personally I stopped shopping for movies at Target because of this.

Even though some titles are covered in the plastic locking boxes, seems that they still end up crushing the slip.

Yes, it's been covered in many threads, which is why I thought (and others also suggested) it deserved its own thread to consolidate reports/pics.

I did not see another thread dedicated to this topic in the forum.

I was lucky enough to pick up The Avengers before they put them in those security cases. The cases don't actually destroy the slip, but the salesperson removing it in a rush does the damage. And, at one of my stores, spider-wraps are scattered about on anything from new releases, to the Uni 100s and TV series sets--crushed slips there! Only recently have they started using the larger cases, but when shook around, it can do just as much damage over time IMO.

I think you would get a better response by posting on their facebook page or twitter as the see it directly. No chance in hell they will find this thread hidden in the deals subforum.

just saying

Agreed; this is a discussion forum. This thread was not created to provide direct feedback to Target (although it'd be cool if it did).

EDIT: I suppose posting the thread link to their Facebook/Twitter would suffice.

Exactly people if you dont like the way Target does things, it's very simple shop somewhere else, or order from Target.com. It's really that simple instead ranting on here.

This is why I don't buy movies from Target anymore. If they're going to continue to use these spider-wraps and plastic coffins, I'll continue to buy my movies elsewhere.

Interesting thread. I had previosuly worked at Target for 8 years in the entertainment dept. and left shortly before they rolled out their new initiative to use all these security devices (the store I was last at for the most part still doesn't use the security devices). Back in May I did my Senior Project on this very subject focusing a lot on Target including not only damaging product, throwing exclusives away, but also looking at safety issues. My local Target has the newer shelving where stuff doesn't even fit in the slot it's supposed to with these security devices and they were falling to the floor and barely visible to what the actually product is supposed to be (something manufacturers do not like since they want their product easily seen). My instructor was a wine/alcohol rep and hates the security device on the products he sells as well. I found out a lot of interesting stuff and it got me an A for the project and my last college class ever. The conclusion and recommendation was to hire more help and it would cost the company less in the long run because current methods are losing purchases because people are getting the same product elsewhere.

I mostly agree with you. I typically only frequent Target when they have better deals and/or exclusives than other stores. Thankfully, I can usually find copies of what I want that are in good condition, but it's still perplexing to see this happen.

I see no reason why this thread shouldn't be in the forum. I really get tired of this micro-modding trend going on in the forum as of late. I tend to hit the new posts button when I'm in the forum. If I see something I don't care about I go onto the next thread. I'd suggest other busy bodies do the same or hit the report button and let a mod decide. Back on point, something that frustrates me is the inconsistency of the policy when it comes to putting these in the security boxes/spider-wrap. If this is such a problem in their stores they should adapt the same cases they have for the games for movies or have 1 copy of the movie and the rest in a lock up location. You can't expect people to pay for damaged goods.

My target also does the spider-wraps and coffins. It is so silly to me that they have the spider wraps on large blu ray sets and they can't put it in the slot so they have to turn them to the side and it just looks stupid.
