Default Cleanup button on thread

Been tossing around some thoughts:

Idea 1
We should have a 3rd button on the far left of posts, next to the "report post", that may be a mop-n-bucket....for thread cleanup.

Or just a button at the top of the thread for thread cleanup.

I see a lot of posts here, complaining about the lack of good threads. Duplicate threads, pointless threads, immature threads...

We just need a good ol' cleanup method.

Additional thoughts on this:

Idea 2
A separate thought on this one is to make the button only available to those who meet a "Time and Post" requirement (example, 300 posts and 3 months). Those that have access to the cleanup button can "flag" a thread for cleanup.

Idea 3
Expanding on this with another thought: Auto-cleanup. After a set number of flags from the authorized users, the thread just gets cleaned up and removed (set the threshold where it would make sense).

If 30 "senior users" feel the thread needs to go (or if it's a dupe), then it should be gone, without any real need for a moderator. Ones that fail to get this 30 flags (again, just using 30 as an example) will still be reviewed by the mods.

This would alleviate some strain on the mods, and allow the senior members to better aid in policing the site.

Abuse the button, and the button gets taken away from you.

It would also result in far more substantive threads.

We can implement any level of my thoughts. I may make a poll to see what thoughts get better response.

Just one of my better lines of thought. They come to me about as rarely as an eclipse.

Unfortunately I have to say I do not want anyone touching my posts, especially non mods.
That opens things up to all kinds of abuse.

i would go with 500 posts before one can do the cleanup. There are less in that realm.

Posts, no. Don't want those being touched. And as for abuse, you abuse the ability, you lose it. I'm talking threads that are dupes or just junk. I mean the whole thread is junk.

I agree that the only ones modifying posts should be mods.

As for threads, I think that only mods should be touching those too. This would just be a "flag thread" as much as the current "flag post". The auto-cleanup was just an additional thought, and admittedly not the best one. If used, perhaps the auto-cleanup just locks the thread instead of deletes it. Then if abused, the mods can unlock the thread and take action against those who abused the function. But then that still doesn't do much for making the mods' jobs easier.

And as for the post limit, someone above mentioned 500 posts would be better. Again, I was just throwing out an arbitrary number for example's sake.

Default Hard to find a balance

On one hand, I see the Mods getting completely overwhelmed here. Especially with the recent announcements.

On the other hand, I see a potential for a lot of abuse by users who simply disagree with other's opinions. There is a reason for Mods after all.

I know I've gotten pretty quiet here lately because stuff is just too chaotic (not pointing fingers at anyone, it's a consequence of the events of the past month or so).

I see it both ways but I guess, in the end, I think that with a few "safeties" this could be a useful function.

It would put pressure on the Mods from a different place though. They will probably see more complaints and they will need to monitor who is doing what pretty closely to avoid abuse.

In the end, anything that can help clean up this forum is probably going to get my vote.

This forum is, at the end of the day, likely to see a lot of new traffic for people researching HDM and I, for one, would like to put our "best foot forward" as far as representing ourselves to others.

I came here as a lurker long before I decided to post and I've enjoyed these forums very much. I go to other forums and post as well, mostly Hi-Def Digest, and this forum is SO much better as far as quality of information and friendliness (the other forums have their purpose too ).

There will always be duplicate threads and the like. It's a consequence of this whole interweb thing that we all use nowadays. I for one would welcome the opportunity to clean up the forums a bit.

a pm to a corresponding mod would ideally be more than enough for them to look into matters, as long as
1. you report what happened.
2. linky of course. those are definitely outstanding points to look at especially when there are members with numerous postings.
3. also try to pm yet another mod just in case.

as mentioned earlier, at the end of the day, this forum should ideally represent what blu is for people, and show others the courtesy to help out as much as possible, and encourage others to be a part of the community in the long run.

Piliam69 had the right ideas. I think I was just scratching my head trying to think about how to help keep this place cleaned up.

Yeah, agreed. I think I might just make a list of threads to be cleaned up, and just PM them as a batch (I see plenty of threads each day that could stand to be closed/moved/deleted). Then I would just send at most 1 a day, instead of 1 per thread. I really don't want to be hassling the mods.

I like the mop-n-bucket idea. Leave it to the mods. This button may actually make it easier to see when newer threads are dupes when people start flagging repeats...

You know, a button like that would have been great for a thread that just popped up, like this one:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=39433

Naming a thread like that (and hopefully the thread gets taken down) should be swiftly tagged with a "report thread" button. We don't need any of that here.

Edit: Sweet. It's gone, and that was the quick turnaround we can be proud of.

The only thing I think this forum needs is a Digg-like commenting system, which would work better than anything else.
