Default Yamaha RX-V1700 Audio Q

My buddy has this receiver in his home theater. Can he get HD sound if he uses his PS3 to process DTS HD and Dolby True? Can he get uncompressed sound from PS3 to Yamaha 1700 via HDMI? Any help would be great!!

yes, i have the same receiver. let the player do the decoding and pass the sound via hdmi as pcm.

currently he can get dolby true-hd from the ps3.

for dts-hd supposedly a firmware update is coming that will decode it. currently, you will only get the core dts track at 1.5mbps (or something like that)

he cant get dts hd but it will come across as LPCM if it is set that way on the ps3 right?

I have that receiver as well, and he just has to set the output to LPCM rather than bitstream on his PS3. As noted above he’ll be getting the core of a DTS – HD track (still sounds pretty good) for the time being.

Hello!
I'm hoping you folks might be able to better help me in the following situation;

I purchased a PS3 (40gb) and have it hooked up to my receiver (RX-v1700) (via HDMI)...and the receiver hooked into the TV (Samsung LNT4665F) directly via the HDMI-out port.

It works fine for the first half hour (sometimes sooner, sometimes later) until the sound & picture starts going in & out (mostly out). It messes up regardless of which setting the audio is set to on the PS3 (usually LPCM).

The PS3 is running the latest firmware (v2.2). I experimented by connecting the PS3 directly to the TV via HDMI...no problems at all! I even let it run multiple video downloads, Blu-Ray movie, games & they all ran w/o a problem.

Ventilation isn't the issue either, it's in the wide open & away from any other heat source.

I have the Xbox 360 (Elite w/HDMI) hooked up the same (using the first HDMI-in port) and it's never given me a problem.

Worst situation; I connect the PS3 directly to the TV (via HDMI) and use a TOSLINK connection to the receiver to handle the audio. But I'll be missing out on the sweet, sweet Dolby Tru-HD stuff when it's available.

Any & all help is appreciated!

Lgkaos, it sounds like your Receiver HDMI input could be faulty? maybe you're not getting a firm connection or its slipping out? Try using another Input...if it still persists, it could be a faulty Output.

Are you able to return it for a new one? if not, perhaps try another cable? maybe the cable connector is faulty?

I thought it might be the HDMI output on the receiver too, but that wouldn't be possible since the 360 works w/o a problem on it. I checked to make sure all the cables were firmly inserted...no problem there either.

I could try to change the input being used for the PS3; instead of using HDMI-input 2, I'll switch it to number 1.

More info that might possibly help troubleshoot...
- When it briefly goes out and loses it, I notice the receiver switches from 'PCM' to 'analog' and vice versa when it starts working again.
- The Xbox 360 has to be switched to the 'DVD' icon via the Input Selector knob on the receiver.
- The PS3 uses the CBL/STL icon instead

For all you PS3+V1700 users out there...what are your settings when using both items?

Once again, thanks!

No dice, disconnected the 360 completely, switched the PS3 over to HDMI-input 1 and even tried using the 3 different HDMI cables available to me. It HAS to be some sort of setting within the receiver that is causing the problem...at least I hope it is. I even tried switching the "Straight Effect" function/button on.

I'm ready to return the PS3 back to the store for a refund if this can't be resolved.

or return it for a new ps3, maybe thats the problem?

did you connect the PS3 directly to the TV and see if it still did the same thing?

Sure did...and it worked beautifully. It seems to be a incompatibility issue between PS3s & Yamaha RX-V1700/2700 receivers. Other users reported the same problem at "the other" popular AV forum (I'd inlcude the link but not sure if it's allowed). Some claim to have fixed it by having sent their unit to a local Yamaya technician/etc for a simple upgrade or modification and it worked.

I'm currently stationed overseas in Korea & purchased the PS3 & receiver from the base BX. I seriously doubt the clerks there would know how to do anything technical w/the receiver...

I currently have the PS3 connected (via HDMI) directly to the TV w/the audio being handled by a TOSLINK cable from the PS3 to the receiver...but it's the principle of it all; a 1080p passthrough receiver should work the way it's supposed to. I might end up returning the receiver & purchasing something else in the future that can handle the work.

Any last minute solutions/setting from other PS3+RX-V1700 owners out there before I do so?

EDIT: A firmware update is available (from 2006) to the RX-V1700 via Yamaha's official website that corrects the following issue: instances when switching between certain digital signals on an RX-V1700 or HTR-6090, the digital signal will mute for an extended period of time or will not return.

That sure sounds alot like my problem...I'll post the results once they become available. I doubt this thread is relevant to many people anymore, but IF it fixes the problem...the next poor soul who googles PS3+RX-V1700 will find what their looking for.

Once again, thanks.

I am interested in this receiver myself, since the price on them is dropping.

Can this receiver pass 1080/24p? I checked the avs forum but found no answer.

Negative on the fix; even after successfully updating the firmware on the receiver...after roughly 30 minutes (sometimes sooner, sometimes later) the playback starts cutting in & out...only w/the new firmware it does it a little quicker.

I'm returning the receiver ASAP...time to do some heavy research for a similar receiver (but one that can handle the PS3). Any suggestions? Once again, thanks!
