I saw "The Island" when it was released in 1980. The film got horrible reviews. It is a strange experience. Most people either love it or hate it. I think over time, the hostility towards the film has softened. It is probably the strangest pirate movie you will ever see. Not the greatest story, or the greatest acting but it does have a strange atmospheric quality. I purchased the Universal MOD dvd last year. Looks great in it's original widescreen format. This film along with "Windows" ranks as the most bizarre films released that year, if not that decade.

Odd one indeed, but strangely entertaining. I bought the German DVD years ago and wouldn't mind upgrading to Blu at all.

Absolutely, I pre-ordered the Blu Ray. Very excited to get this in HD. Ennio Morricone's score really stands out. Very haunting. "The Island" was a huge misfire for Universal at the time. I remember the audience being revolted by the cheerful pirate score accompanying the violence on screen. Quite a contrast. If you enjoy odd cinematic experiences. I recommend it.

Anything with Michael Caine's cockney accent gets my seal of approval!

Frankly, I'd save my money if I were you. The film's just not that good.

No sadly I wouldn't classify this as a "good" film. It's more of a cult experience for an adventurous moviegoer. There are scenes and dialog that will probably make you wanna go "WTF?" If you haven't seen it, you may want to screen it before purchasing. It isn't a cup of tea that many would appreciate. "The Island" must have done well on MOD to warrant a BluRay release, which I'm very excited and happy about.
