Default Aspect ratio question

So I know letterboxing can't simply go away, And I dont mind it at all, but are there any aspect ratios that fill the screen? Spider Man 3 is at 2.40:1 The black bars maybe fill 4-5 inches of the screen, hard to even notice. Are there better ratios I can look for when I buy bluray disks?

Simple math 16/9 = 1.78 so anything from 1.66-1.85:1 will be full screen.
Until they start making 16/7 sets you will have bars.

Bill Hunt from thedigitalbits.com has posted an excellent explanation about widescreen movies. Its a must read!

Would you really watch movies that fill the screen instead of movies that you love and enjoy?

Default Aspect Ratio Issues

I just received my 5 free blu rays by mail for purchasing a ps3. I dont understand why newer movies that are filmed in high def have black bars? I know older movies that are converted into this format will have these ratios, but I just dont get it with movies like Spider Man 3 & The Prestige. For example, I watched The Prestige through my on demand hd dvr box from comcast. It was located under Encore HD on demand free movies. I watched in hd with the entire screen filled (I know those ratios are around the 1.85:1 range) but when I received the blu ray in the mail it was 2.35:1 format. I dont understand why the cable company can produce a full screen, yet Warner Bros. produce blu rays with the black bars? I dont speak alone when saying that we dont purchase widescreen hdtvs and blu ray players to have black bars on the screen for newer movies filmed in high def. GET IT TOGETHER MOFO'S!!!!!!!

They got it together, your cable company is the one that doesn't have it together. You realize that to get the movie to fit your whole screen, they cut the sides off the movie,.

Please research aspect ratios.

"...for newer movies filmed in high def." Some movies are shot in high def but most are shot on film... about as high def as you're going to get right now. And before you misunderstand me - it doesn't matter whether a movie is shot on film, high-def or VHS - the aspect ratio is decided by the film-makers. Your cable company cropped the sides off of The Prestige when presenting it to fill the screen - to the detriment of the filmmaker's vision.

- I could say "when are you going to "get it together" and go Anamorphic and not have to worry about black bars?

Just the opposite. Grain when seen in HD is not an artifact of BD. It is exactly as seen in theaters. DVD will soften grain due to the lesser PQ. Black Bars are visible only due to preserving the original aspect ratio.

True, some BDs have 16 X 9 aspect ratio. Why? I would prefere they didn't so as to view the movie in exactly the same aspect it was filmed in. You are loosing some picture that way on the sides. And this practice might e ven make grain a tad more visible as it is blowing up the picture to fit the vertical limitations of the TV screen.

Wicky Woo here said it best. "Turn out the lights if Black bars bother you.

My bad as you apparently missed the sarcasm. I don't post a lot, but I read a TON on here. So I probably should have mentioned Transformers, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars also. Then my extreme wit would have been abundantly clear.

No. Sarcasm, yes but a valid question to answer the OP with. Not directed twards answering you in particular. ( I see I have some competition now in the dry humor dept. )

There are existing post on Transformers, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars already.

Some movies are filmed in a 16:9 ratio, or in 1.85:1 (Apocalypto). Those movies aren't losing anything because that was how they were filmed. I think that the OP just wants all future movies to be shot in that ratio. Which is not going to happen because some movies are better served with the wider ratio. Personally I enjoy 1.85:1 just because I think they look better, but if it is 2.35:1 I don't really care because I try to always watch movies in the dark.
