Deep Space 9

Following the success of Star Trek: The Next Generation on blu-ray, CBS is perhaps considering the complex and expensive remastering of this show for blu-ray. My teenage son, my 11 year old daughter and I all vote a big YES. We've been enjoying this show together, and we'd buy it to see it with the clarity it deserves. You can watch it now on netflix in sometimes muddy and murky transfers that are better than nothing.

A little about DS9 from wikipedia:

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (sometimes abbreviated to ST: DS9 or DS9) is a science fiction television series set in the Star Trek universe.

The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, approximately during the 2370s. Unlike the other Star Trek TV shows, it took place on a space station instead of a starship, so as not to have two series with starships at the same time (the starship USS Defiant was introduced in season 3, but the station remained the primary setting for the show). This made continuing story arcs and the appearance of recurring characters much more feasible. The show is noted for its well-developed characters and its original, complex plots. The series depended on darker themes, less physical exploration of space, and (in later seasons) an emphasis on many aspects of war...

A spin-off from Star Trek: The Next Generation, DS9 began while its parent series was still on the air and there were a few crossover episodes between the two shows. The station's first appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation was during the sixth season episode "Birthright" and in addition, two Next Generation characters, Miles O'Brien and (from Season 4 onwards) Worf, became regular members of DS9....

The decision as to whether paramount decides to release Deep Space 9 will probably be based off of how well the sales of The Next Generation blu rays go when you consider the restoration cost. If there is profit there than we will probably see a release.

Exactly as you say! And so let's hope Star Trek fans are buying up the Next Gen on blu-ray.

TrekCore: Last time we heard from you guys at Comic Con, DS9 was officially “on your radar” for remastering. Ryan gave a beautifully cryptic quote that CBS were “considering it”. How are plans moving along? We have a constant stream of emails, with hundreds of fans asking about it.

Ryan Adams: See, well that’s wonderful! Here’s the thing, David and I would love nothing more than to segue from TNG into DS9 and all of them to be honest with you. We’re having a blast doing this. And when I see that we engage with the fans, I love the fact that they’re writing in. In order for us to go to John Nogawski, Scott Koondel – the decision makers, let’s call them – and get an approval for this, we need that kind of stuff behind us. We need to be able to say “The fans are screaming for this. This is what they want next.” And like we said at Comic Con too, it would really depend on – because let’s be honest, it’s financial as well for the studio – on how well TNG does. And since it’s doing well thus far, David and I are still very hopeful that [DS9] will be one of the next big projects that we do. So our hope is “yes”, but we still have to get the decision makers to say yes.

TrekCore: So there’s been no official green light yet?

My teenage son has been into DS9 in a big way for the last year, watching it on Netflix instant in low res, which is sometimes frustrating after the amazing clarity of TNG on blu-ray. Anyway, we are now at the last season of DS9--#7. I never watched much of it back in the day (was a big fan of TNG and Voyager, but somehow didn't last much past season 1 of DS9), and I had no idea that they did an EPIC 10 part finale. We are on part 8 right now. I think DS9 had the most amazing finish of any of the Star Trek shows. It's like a series of movies.....

There are so many things and characters to enjoy about it that it's hard to pick any favorites, but of the baddies the Wayoun Clone guy(s) (all of them!) is/are great. He's so creepy, but he really makes me laugh. The whole show is quite impressive. Would love to see it on blu-ray and would definitely buy. Next Gen fans like me who never got fully into DS9 back in the day should give it a try. It's a show that started a little stronger than next gen, and just kept slowly building right up until the end. The Seventh year is the best, but every season has a lot of good episodes.

Weyoun is a fictional character from the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, in which he is portrayed by Jeffrey Combs. In the series, Weyoun is a diplomat and advisor of the Vorta species who is a member of the ruthless and militaristic Gamma quadrant state the Dominion. Like all Vorta, Weyoun is officious and sycophantic, always deferring to the Founders yet being ruthless in dealing with enemies and those under his command.

Bought the first season and will be buying all the other seasons when released too. Hoping to see DS9 on blu ray. Always enjoyed this show. Hard to say which series is my favorite between The Next Generation or DS9 because both had fantastic storylines.

Voyager is a very good show too, imho.

A fan "music video" of parts of the epic Dominion War on DS9. You can see how completely recreating from scratch special effects this extensive in high definition would cost $$....But I hope they do it.

DS9 is my favorite Trek show, the most serialized with the best actors, characters and story arc(s).
It has also the most complex characters, the most conflict among the regulrs and the most greyish character and moral depictions.

Can't wait to have this on BD and in the meantime I will have fun with the "The Next Generation" and "Enterprise" Blu-Rays.

+1 for DS9 and all the other unreleased Trek. I honestly believe at some point everything will be released on bluray. STNG will pave the way for conversion (in releation to DS9 and Voyager). They will have the process streamlined and cost effective by then.

Blu-ray would be only a fraction of the profit to be made. There would also be resyndication of the high definition episodes for various channels not including new sales/streaming for Netflix, Amazon, on Demand, etc.

Hoping for an announcement for a rebuild of DS9 on blu-ray soon!

S6 of TNG is due around May or so, And then S7 might hit around August. If we're lucky, that might mean we'll get S1 of DS9 as early as December? Here's hoping, anyway....

I still think it would be awesome pairing to put as a killer extra on the All Good Things stand-alone "movie" a remaster of the classic DS9 episode Trials and Tribble-ations. That would get fans of almost all generations of Star Trek to buy it, and would serve as a good intro to DS9 for newcomers. Plus, it wouldn't steal any content from S1 of DS9....

Apparently CBS-D have already had Season 1 of DS9 removed from the salt mine and sent to them just incase any content for TNG Season 6 was mixed in due to that season featuring DS9 in 'Birthright Pt1' and a Runabout in 'Timescape'

Definitely a positive regarding a possible HD release of DS9 if they already have the material on hand, fingers crossed they flow from TNG S7 straight into DS9 S1

Not sure how badly I want this, although one of my season 7 DVDs simply won't play one of the episodes, which annoys me quite a bit, even though it's just 1 episode.

I want this pretty bad. It would be a shame if they stopped now. The TOS and TNG sets upgrades have been well worth it.

I'm not a huge fan of Voyager by any stretch of the imagination, but hell, I'd even pick that up if they upgrade to HD.

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a break in between TNG season 7 and DS9 season 1 though.

I'm watching in low rez the 6-part epic that starts the sixth season. Hope we all get to see this in HD someday.

Guys I'll probably be writing an article at TrekCore about this soon enough, but I feel it's important to clarify the position of DS9 on Blu-ray here.

* CBS have been looking into the possibility of doing the later shows - DS9 and Voyager - for quite some time.
* They've obviously worked out these shows will be MUCH more expensive compared to TNG due to their CG elements.
* Right now, there are NO PLANS in place to do either Deep Space Nine or Voyager. That's not to say things may change in the future, however if you're hoping that DS9 Season 1 will be hitting shelves after TNG wraps, I'd revise expectations.
* This is a huge problem for CBS Digital (the team working on TNG). They've hired, trained and perfected a "dream team" who know Star Trek inside out. Once TNG is finished (in a matter of weeks), that team will have no big project to work on. Obviously you know what the implications of that are.

That's everything. In a nutshell. I'm not able to go into more detail unfortunately, but this is an honest representation of where things stand right now.

Roger Lay, Jr. and Robert Meyer Burnett are back again with another multi-part documentary covering the history of TNG - "Beyond the Five Year Mission: The Evolution of Star Trek: The Next Generation". There's no reunion special on this set - the duo had planned to get a collection of TNG directors together but couldn't find a date that worked for everybody. Nevertheless, fans have a new trio of audio commentaries, deleted scenes and bloopers to keep them occupied.

So what about that documentary? “Evolution” combines three thirty-minute segments, “The Lithosphere”, “The Biosphere” and “The Noosphere”.

“Part One: The Lithosphere” is frustrating - it's almost as if this part doesn't know what it wants to be. The first half of it is purely dedicated to Deep Space Nine. Now I'm a huge Niner, but this stuff really felt out of place to me - numerous archival interviews with Colm Meaney, Michael Piller and Rick Berman, talking about the premise of the show and the pilot, all interspersed with numerous (SD) clips from "Emissary". I understand DS9 launched during TNG's sixth season, but there are almost no references to TNG here. I'd love to have heard the TNG crew's reactions when they discovered a new series was on the way. At one point Rick Berman hints at potential dischord ("it wasn't really a conflict, but things got a bit crazy"), but this is never followed up on! Meanwhile the second half of this part is a rather abbreviated compilation of snippets from creative staff including Naren Shankar, René Echevarria and writer Morgan Gendel. There are a couple of cute anecdotes in here (I enjoyed René's story of how he wanted to kill Will Riker in "Second Chances"), but things are all too brief and the documentary chops unrelated stories together in a rather haphazard fashion
