Default Prices on Blu

Am i the only one who think these prices are getting out of control?
The Amazing Spiderman 3-D = List price: $55.99
Prometheus 3-D = List price: $49.99
Men in Black 3 regular = List price: $40.99
Men in Black 3-D = List price: $55.99
just to name few
Of course most of us will not pay full SRP but i find this boarding on the absurd.
This will of course lead to fewer sales and even more download, it's that simple in my opinion.

Prometheus was $20 with U&S. No one is paying anywhere near those prices...

...unless they shop at Barnes and Noble.

I know right. Even though those are the SRP, I haven't seen many titles go that high before.

if this was 2006 those prices would seem maybe almost reasonable, but as of today, no one would pay those prices, no one ever really pays srp

The SRP is there for one reason, and one reason ONLY!

Look at Amazon. They always list the SRP and are able to slap a giant "% OFF" graphic on top of the item image. It's consumer psychological warfare! The SRP is there to make us think we are always getting a deal even when the actual purchase price is still high.

This is the exact reason that I don't even bother looking at ANYTHING other than the price I am actually having to pay at that particular moment.

The sad thing is, there are plenty of idiots who don't shop around and do just grab the first copy they see off the shelf at the first retailer they go to. I think that's why MSRP is set this high. Some places will do it for a while and they'll see some go off the shelves. Then a couple weeks later, they start dropping prices. Granted, if you're a smart consumer, you'll shop around and find the movie for half off MSRP. But, there's plenty of people who don't.

My Dad is one of those kind of people. He's got money so when he sees something he wants, he buys it, and rarely thinks too much about the price. He'll come home and I'll look at his receipt and see that he paid $29.99 for some title, just because it's a new release and wherever he bought it decided not to have it on sale for release week. And I'll be like, dude, if you want to throw money away, give it all to me and I'll order all your titles off amazon for you! And then I'll keep the extra money.

This, as well.

I agree, it looks pretty good when you see a movie that's 75% percent off for $19.99. I never even bother to look at percentages off, just the bottom line price.

3-D versions were largely introduced into the home market to raise the list price of the most expensive edition and make the normal Blu-ray release look cheap by comparison.

List/MSRP in retail also dictates the cost of an item (prior to any other incentives), so a higher list would mean a higher cost to the retailer. Obviously, there are other factors involved such as bulk discounts, overstock, discontinued items, etc., but the MSRP does serve a purpose.

My concern with this is studios reserving exclusive bonus content for 3D versions as opposed to the standard editions like they did with Prometheus. I personally do not obsess over extras, but that 4 hour doc is a considerable upgrade. I hate the idea of buying a 3D disc when I have no intentions of ever owning a 3D tv.

Almost all blu-rays have an MSRP of at least $39.99.

But thats never the asking price in-store, online or wherever else.

As much as I am not a fan of this practice... you can sell your 3d disk on ebay. There are plenty of 3d only disks on there.. most of them sell for $10 or more. I picked up a few that I could just sneak in with my 2d version (Alice in Wonderland and Megamind).

But then the studios are gonna continue this practice of putting exclusives on the 3D version because in their mind it "Sells better than the standard edition!" - I wonder why... (Hint: it's not because of 3D)

As a general rule, if you pay more than 20 bucks for a movie, you're a sucker.
Most movies have decent sales during the first week; if you don't grab it then, wait a few months and you'll see some sales pop up. If it slips under your radar for longer you may get an even better deal, or realize that you didn't need to buy the movie in the first place.

One fun thing to do is when a new release comes out, and it's over 20, check out the 7.99 or so titles. Grab a couple of classics and wind up spending less money than getting a new release. I've bought some amazing titles for much less than they are actually worth by doing this, and have introduced myself to great films that I had never seen before (American History X, 2001, I Spit on Your Grave, American Psycho, and Doubt, just to name a few).

One of the common misconceptions that has carried over from the earlier days of Blu-Ray is that it simply costs too much, but for the past couple of years I've been seeing some great deals, not even counting the used market.

It should probably also be stated that ridiculous MSRP prices were also around in the days of DVD.

So 3D TV's and Blu-Ray players appearing on the market and getting purchased had nothing to do with that? Uh.....ok.

Exactly, and it is making me very angry!

Not easy for me, since I live in Europe, and most people would want the German dub, whereas I only import US BDs. Probably not a common problem, but it is one for me. Also, it's an additional hassle, if you have to put stuff online. Wastes time..which is money...

Consumers are parctically being forced into buying 3-D HDTVs and BD players, since those are the only ones available.
