I bought and watched it at lunch today. The movie is beautiful. The colors and animation is unbelievable. That being said, the story moves very fast and at a runtime of 74 minutes or so, it is too short. I think that reading the original comic might help give a better background, but you are thrust right into this world.
I think that it could have been better if it was longer. I did like it, but I wouldn't pay $30 for it. I got it at Walmart for $19.99 with a price compare from Circuit City.
Again, the animation, the way the characters are drawn is really nice to see. I love the golden age of comics feel to the movie, which is what they wanted. This is the second classic animation that I have seen on BD, the other being the Simpsons movie. This was awesome! One of the special features is a couple episodes from the JLU cartoon that aired a year or two back. It is only in 480, but you can tell what a difference 1080p will do to classic animation styles.

I really didn't care for Superman: Doomsday that was released a few months back. I am more of a Superman/Batman purist and I didn't like the way that story went. However, if it came out on BD and looked as good as The New Frontier, I would buy it again.

I just watched it. Warner included a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack thankfully. It looks very good. For the most part it's simple clean animation so it should look good. The picture quality is just a step below something like The Simpsons Movie BD. It's a typical Warner VC-1 encode with bitrates averaging 15-25 Mbps. It would probably deserve a low tier 1 ranking on other boards. My scores:

Video: 8.75 out of 10
Audio: 6.5 out of 10

I highly recommend this BD to anyone who liked the Justice League animated series or the Timm Batman series. It is aimed at adults clearly.

I was going to leave this in the Netflix queue, but as soon as I read jasoncarmony's post about Circuit City's pricing I went to Best Buy and got it there.

Before I comment on the disc, I just want to say that I don't understand some people's "it's a cartoon it doesn't benefit from Blu-ray" mindset. I think this is totally untrue, and in some ways animation is a great way to show off Blu-ray.

On to the disc . . . as I'm sure you could imagine from my comments above, the film looks incredible. The thing I love about these "standard" animation films is that the picture looks like it's being drawn in fresh, glossy ink right on your screen. I did see a couple things that distracted me, though. In the opening (I watched it yesterday, so forgive me that I don't remember what logo it is exactly) there's a logo that is all red, which looks like it has some "jaggies" going on. No big deal, it's a logo, and it's not terrible. I also noticed the same thing, in some scenes, in the Martian Manhunter's eyes. Again, no big deal, but it's there.

I was kind of underwhelmed by the audio. One thing I like about animation (particularly Pixar) films is that the audio mixes are usually fairly aggressive when it comes to having the sound coming from all over the place, and I didn't get that from this. It's not bad, and I was very pleased to see that it has a TrueHD track, but it wasn't as good as I had hoped.

As far as the film itself, I thought it was quite good. While I don't like the design of The Batman that they used (yeah, I know it's 50's style, but I never could get into the gloves that were a different color from anything else on the costume), I thought all the characters were voiced well and the style was true to the comics. I appreciated the fact that they went with the PG-13 rating and there is definitely some stuff you're not used to seeing in DCU animation.

Overall . . . I definitely recommend it, and I hope DC keeps coming out with quality animated films. I was worried about these after Marvel's releases, but I think these DC films outdo everything Marvel did in every way. Can't wait for Gotham Knight!

It looks really good, pic is very bright crisp. I had it in my basement tv so I didn't get a guage on surround yet, that setup is upstairs.

I was surprised that it was violent.

I bought for my 5yr old and right off the back a dude puts a gun to the head of somebody and blows him away with blood all over. I saw the the pg-13 but dang, superman returns wasn't that violent!!

Yeah, I watched last night too. The violence was a surprise (nice surprise for the adult in me). But yeah, I wouldnt show it to kids either.

But the PQ was great. I too noticed the jaggies around the few bright red objects. but overall, it wasnt distracting enough to ruin it.

Other than that, I thought the way the colors 'popped' was gorgeous.

A lot different from other Justice League but, i think its because it is in 1950s and whoever made this movie intended that way. PQ is awesome, I am glad I picked it up at bb for 14.99 and they had like 2 copies left after i brought mine. I was surprised with th eviolence too and it was for adults though.
Too bad my brother is buying it on SDVD! hehe

That's the only problem I had with the movie. For some reason they used costumes for Batman and Superman from the Golden Age(or at least a homage to that era) and all the other characters are shown in their classic Silver Age costumes. Marvel's animated movies are trash compared to DC's animated movies.

You guys do know there was a 'New Frontier' Comic mini series that this was based on, right? The story and the costumes? It wasnt just a random story they decided to throw together.

Even Batman's costume change mid way was noted. I'm pretty sure the gist was that is was the end of the Golden Age, and the very beginning of the Silver. So I dont see why Batman and Superman wouldnt have those costumes.

Why do they keep changing the animation on the Superheros. I'm too used to the Justice League on Cartoon Network.

Top shelf movie, can not praise it enough.
A must for anyone who grew up a comic fan before the dark days of Rob Liefeld.

Agreed. I wish Marvel would take the animated stuff away from lionsgate. So far everything they have done on BD has looked like crap (animation quality). Anxious to see this BD.

Doc Strange was actually surprisingly good. I never knew much about the character, so if its faithful to the comic or not I have no idea. The first Avengers was mediocre, but i can watch it. I find Avengers 2 unwatchable, and I've heard Ironman was worse so I never bothered checking it out.

But for those who havent given Doc Strange a chance, I recommend at least giving it a rent. You may be surprised.

The Iron Man animated movie is an abomination to the character. I had a hard time staying awake watching it.
