Default PS3 In-Game XMB Ready To Release, Home Coming Soon + “Accomplishments”

8 days old but good reading.

http://www.dbtechno.com/gaming/2008/...e-coming-soon/

Quote:
Washington (dbTechno) - The highly-anticipated Home for the Sony PS3 is apparently getting very close to release, as reports are also coming out that the in-game XMB for the PS3 is complete, which will allow for in-game and cross-game chatting, as well as the ability to pull up music and messages whenever you desire.

According to the Official PlayStation Forums, the PSedge dev kit has received an update.

The poster stated that there have been many new updates including new things added specifically for Home. One of the new big updates is that games must now be able to integrate into Home, and also has to support “Accomplishments” which are Sony’s answer to Xbox Live Achievement Points on the Xbox 360.

It was also noted that the in-game XMB for the PS3 is about ready to go.

It was stated that every single game which is coming out now for the PS3 will support the in-game XMB, and all older releases will be updated via a patch.

PS3 fans can rejoice, it seems that Home is not far away, and the in-game XMB is about ready to release, get set for the next PS3 firmware update!
FUTURE UPDATE

Blu-ray Profile 2.0 - as early as May or June (Sony told Home Cinema Choice Magazine that PS3 owners can expect the firmware update when the first BD Live stand-alone players hit the market.)

I'm not too sure about the Accomplishments...sounds just like a half ass knock off of Microsofts Achievements. I don't think it will catch on as well as it has with the 360.

Good news about the in-game XMB though, this was long awaited and needed. Hopefully Home is not delayed any further and thus the update for the XMB if it is rolled into the same update.

There are technically already accomplishments built into a PS3 few games. It's not going to catch on now since they are nothing more than an on-screen pop up. But once Home is released, achievements and accomplishments are translated into trophies and such for this dynamic Matrix-style trophy room and Hall of Fame. It looks absolutely amazing and the 360's achievements pale in comparison. I definitely think that will catch on.

For those of you interested, here is a GDC 2007 walkthrough of Home. You'll need quicktime.

The Hall of Fame/Trophy room I was talking about is at the 80-90% mark.

Yeah but PS3 needs this! Achievements are a wildly popular feature on 360 titles and many times it's translated into higher review scores for the 360 versions of multiplatform games. At least it will put PS3 titles on an equal playing field.

I disagree. Many many PS3 owners want this! Plus the added "cool" factor of having actual 3d trophies in a trophy room instead of simple text on a screen will make it even MORE popular than achievements.

The reason they are wildly popular though is because of the gamercard and the competition gamers get from trying to have more achievements than anyone else, or than their friends.

There is no global tracking for accomplishments setup so there is little more substance to these "new" accomplishments than the lame achievements you can unlock in games now on the PS3. No one cares now because they really don't mean anything. A 3d graphic isn't going to change that either.

Sony needs to setup a tracking system like MS did, so the accomplishments are worth oging after. As it stands now, its just a lame add on. For once I agree with EA and would have loved to hear an actual response from Sony when they got asked this. Sony obviously has no idea why people like achievements.

I never understood the concept of achievements, and they date back way before xbox360, no one really cared back then, now people care now?

If they can issue out a 3d trophy does that not mean they can track those accomplishments.

This whole thing sounds like a privacy nightmare, I guess its great for those that like to gloat, but thats not fun is it?

Yeah but I'm sure it will evolve. I don't think Sony will just throw these "accomplishments" out there and then forget about it.

I don't know why everyone's assuming that accomplishments won't be trackable outside of home.

I really hope Sony comes through with a complete system for these accomplishments and not just the trophy room in Home. I was initially excited about Home but without even using it the novelty has already worn off for me. I still think it's a good idea and will go over really well once released, just not my cup of tea. I think Microsoft did a very good job with Live and I really hate complementing Microsoft on anything.

Some folks here remind me of this hilarious graphic I saw:

Achievements are good not because you can share them or try to beat out of people, but because it simply adds more playability to the game. For example, I had beaten Burnout Paradise by the beginning of February, but since there were dozens of achievements/accomplishments included in the game, I had things to keep pursuing and added several more hours to the actual gameplay. It has absolutely nothing to do with comparing with some d-bags online so I can say "lawlz i has mroe pts zomg i pwn." It's about getting more bang for my $60. Getting a trophy for my Hall of Fame in Home or unlocking a new feature just makes it slightly more rewarding.

I don't care how you dice it, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the PS3 getting free, new features for gamers.

I just think it's another reason for someone to throw a tantrum when something doesn't go their way in an online game. Play because a game is fun, not because you feel compelled to unlock worthless rewards.

I'd rather developers more effort into GoldenEye-style unlockables, something with real value.

Yep.

Assassin's Creed is a good example. I felt like buying it on the PS3 was slightly a mistake. There was no reason to collect the flags or kill the templars.

Part of that was a mistake on the game maker's side, but the rest was the fact that you had nothing to show for your effort--unlike the 360 version.

People have always cared about achievements. Some more than others. For me, it's not really competition. I like going on Live and seeing what my friends have done in games and trying to match them. It's all good fun. I hope the PS3 follows along.

but whether you like it or not, its something the 360 has the ps3 doesnt..so its in sony best interest to at least match microsoft on everything

You're right we might as well just as well get rid of all online highscore boards while we're at it. It's not like social media is popular or anything.

God who gives a crap. If you don't care about accomplishments then just ignore it. Just be happy that the PS3 can take away another talking point from the XBOX 360. It adds to another on-line feature that the 360 touts. It's popular and it will take off with the younger crowd and if you want to keep you consumers loyal you better appeal to your younger crowd as they will become your legacy consumer.I can't even believe people are complaining and arguing over this.

I'm not sure if you are being facetious or not, but that's not what I said or implied.
