Universal Pictures UK has been pleased with the success of Gladiator on Blu-ray, which has resulted in a high level of customer satisfaction. However, whilst there was no technical fault on the original Blu-ray master, a small number of enthusiasts have expressed a preference towards slight technical alterations. After careful consideration, we have revisited the mastering process to address those concerns.



If you wish to exchange your original UK purchased DVNR (digital video noise reduction) feature disc we ask that you send us just your disc 1 in an envelope with your name and address enclosed. Please keep your original packaging and we will post you out a new disc 1. We will post out to any country as long as a UK disc was purchased.

Please note there is no difference to packaging and the only way to tell if you have a new or old disc is by the inclusion of ‘Pocket Blu’ on the new disc only. Please check you are only returning old discs.

Sorry for bumping an old thread but i'm currently winning this on ebay and the seller doesn't say anything about new or old discs.

What was wrong with the original discs?

The first version they brought out wasn't the best quality, they used an old DVD-master or something like that.
Please look at the two reviews and compare their screenshots, you'll instantly notice the differences.
The new transfer is simply beautiful.

I must add, I'm not sure which has the new transfer. I have a SteelBook with the "white" design, and I know it has the new transfer.
A SteelBook with the "mask"-design for example might just have the old transfer, unless they eventually updated the disc.
It's been thoroughly discussed, but I can't exactly remember which release has which disc/transfer.

There was too much DNR applied which actually scrubbed some of the image away (in some cases arrows in flight in battle scenes) bowing to criticism and pressure, a new transfer was done and released with the option for people to get their discs swapped if they wanted to. This included the steelbook...I did. You may want to email the seller to ask as the newer transfer is certainly a lot better. Not sure if the replacement scheme is still in place if not

That was the initial reaction, yes. But in fact there's a lot more wrong with it.
Not only the low detail, perhaps by DNR, which also showed little to no actual grain.
There was also quite a bit of edge-enhancement applied. Still, that's not all.
The whole exposure to the film seems to be different, bringing a whole different look to the lighting of the film.
This probably also changed the colors and made the look a lot warmer.

The difference is quite huge and it's probably one of the clearest examples between good and bad BD-transfers.

Email the seller and ask them if it has the pocket blu label as highlighted below:

The seller reckon they look like the old discs and i've now been outbidded so i'll wait and get them somewhere else.

i noticed a seller on amazon has a mint copy for just £20 so i'll message them to find out if they have the new discs.

yep that was copy i was on about. i sent a message asking if it has the original or new replacements discs and i got back:

The steel book was the first to come out on blu ray and it was not remastard . you need this one becouse i own this and it looks amazing

ok thanks mate.

I just manged to get steelbook for just £10 on cex website. It might be battered but if it is , i can always trade it back in

So far i've got 2 steels from their site and they both have been mint so fingers crossed

I'll pick up the Augmented reality version when its in stock in my local and i'll put the new disc in the steel.
