Default surround sound modes

Hi I have an onkyo 705 and I was just wondering for those of you using the ps3 for a bluray player what mode do you set it at for watching movies? I understand with a 5.1 truehd track I'm not using my rear speakers but when I switch to say thx cinema2 which converts a 5.1 to 7.1 it sometimes doesn't sound as good and sometimes it does. I guess what I'm really asking is sound I just leave it at multichannel or use the other formats? Dunno maybe I need my ears checked or something

Do any of the modes on the 705 simulate only the side/rear surround speakers?
I tned to prefer discrete 5.1 over simulated sound. Tends to be clearer. But I was wondering if any of the modes on the 705 would preserve the discreet 5.1 sounds for the front/center channels and only matrix/simulate the surround by using all 4 rear/side speakers?

On my Integra, I use the "Direct" setting which isn't supposed to muck with processing, and I let my PS3 do the decoding (output as 24-bit PCM).

I'm pretty sure that the thx mode does preserve the front/center channels. I just noticed that there is 2 thx select cinema modes; neo 6 and plx2. I'm currently using the thx plx2 mode. I watched a few scenes of Spiderman 3 back to back on both formats and noticed on thx the surrounds weren't as loud as a direct/multichannel. But the difference is very slim/not really worth mentioning.

you can also try and use the THX surround EX setting on the 705
Or thx cinema neo:6, Pro-logic2x, or thx select2 or the neural thx 7.1

I have a 5.1 setup and it seems that neural thx 5.1 sounds the best with my PS3 and Onkyo 805. Although the onkyo is still new to me and I'm still tweaking it.
