Default Blu-ray to Truly Take over in 2012?

According to MultiMedia Intelligence, they say it is likely.

12-21-12 is the date the Mayan calendar ends -- and some say -- so will life on Earth.

Hmmm... sounds like a premise for a movie.

The Mayans would be very disappointed to know that December 22, 2012 will proceed after that day just as planned.

By the by, two films are already in development based around the Mayan-calendar-hoopla.

That is the day that the sun in perspective from the earth comes in line with the center of the milky way galaxy. That is why the calendar ends at this point, because it is a significant celestial event.

What would be the market forces driving development of a new format? 1080p isn't even being broadcast yet. The networks are either 720p or 1080i. Since the best HDTVs are 1080p, why would there be a use or need for something better than Blu-ray?

It is not the end of anything. Sure the Mayan Calendar "ends", but it actually cycles. Numbers were a very big and sacred thing to the Mayans. They used an unusual count system called the Long Cycle which has a total of 1872000 days (or 13.0.0.0.0, or 13 baktuns). From the day the Long Cycle started it will end on 12/21/12 at noon. However this is a calendar for measuring winter solstices and the like, not a counter for the end of time. It is amazing to see how accurately they predicted the convergence (alignment) of our sun (Sol) and the Galactic Equator (center of the Milky Way).
Don't get me wrong here... the Mayans were amazing people, and very smart. However I met an actual Mayan (descended from the Mayan people at Tulum) and he told me that the calendar is not the end of the world, but a renewal of the cycle that involves a renewal of life as well.
I for one will read up more on this, and maybe I'll do something to celebrate it, but it is in no way the end of time.

Heh.. got way off topic again didn't we. So about those Blu-rays!
I hope Blu-ray gained more acceptance than that. I want to see a drastic shift toward blu-ray in 2010. But I can see how 2012 is a good year for Blu-ray.

2012 wouldn't be too bad a time for Blu-ray to outsell DVD. Blu-ray is starting with a much smaller market than DVD (only worthwhile to people with HDTV's), so any forecast that it will eclipse DVD at all is a good one.
