They didn't take themselves serious.
What you don't realize is the Schumachers Batman films were more like the TV series from the 60's not the comic books. Nolan has the comics version, especially from the 90's, down pat. Burtons versions were good, Nolan is still better.

Ummm...the 60's TV show is based on the comics of the 50's. In other words, there's a campier version of the character in the comics and a darker version. Nolan and Burton both did a good job with the darker version. I think Schumacher failed with the campier version. Campy can be good if the writing is good. The writing in his Batman movies, especially Batman & Robin, was simply atrocious.

Both were good for their time. Burton basically changed the image of Batman among regular movie go-ers.. And I loved the Gothic feel and quirkiness he added to his films. Great stuff

Nolan took some huge risks, making everything realistic, powerful and high calibrated story-telling...Again changed the image of Batman.

But I would have to go with Nolan. He put a lot of effort into Batman. He took Batman like a MOVIE..not like a comic book movie. But in all fairness in 1989 when Batman came out...people weren't ready for a superhero movie with depth.

Both are great directors....and I think its about time both received an Academy Recognition. Especially Burton, he has been around for a long time.

Nolan is still pretty much young. He only made 6 films and all are great(especially Memento and TDK). I can see him winning best writer/director someday

Should have already won for Memento right off the bat. It's a masterpiece.

OK, Joel Schumacher was awful. It's obviously between Burton and Nolan.

Burton's films were more faithful to the comic book but Nolan's films were better executed. Nolan's films carried more weight because of the chilling post 9/11 political commentary running throughout the trilogy. I also think Bale pulled off the dual personalities better than Keaton as well.

Sorry I'm new and trying to figure out this site, lol. When I look up movies I see like threads on the bottom of the screen and I click on them and answer them, haha. I didn't even look at the dates. Sorry if it's annoying, haha. I'll figure out how everything works soon enough.

Nolan is responsible for Rises, so I'd have to say Burton. However, considering just Begins and Knight, then it's closer. Returns is by far my favorite Batman film, but both Begins and Knight are great. It's hard to say.

It's gotta be Nolan top - he has provided, in Batman, a series for a generation and one of the greatest trilogies ever made. He's a superb film-maker who has been influenced to various degrees by other amazing directors, yet balances homage with his own unique touch.

Second is Burton; he's a technically brilliant director, and has an amazing eye for detail and framing. His Batman films were Gothic before Nolan - who definitely took some ideas from Batman Returns for Batman Begins - and quirky. I love them and do believe that they have a more re-watchability than Nolan's three (just because you notice more in the frame and dialogue with every re-watch).

Burton is easily the best, he's fallen out of favor recently but his batman movies are great

Nolan I don't really care for. he makes great crime stories that just HAPPEN to have a maked vigilante in them, but HORRIBLE batman movies (except for Begins)

The thing about Schumacher is while he takes blame, he was basically a hired gun giving the studios exactly what they wanted. He had it in him to give a Batman that was dark like Flatliners and Falling Down (which he wanted to do after B&R), but that's not what Warner wanted.

yup, Schumacher is kinda like Anderson and Ratner, good studio yes men who have some talent of their own , but he studios like to use them for projects they dont' want any "guff" from

I've learned a little more about how some directors simply don't have the power to do what they want with a movie. The studios have a lot of influence.

Warner Bros probably deserves a lot more blame than Schumacher does. The thing I don't understand is why they wanted to kiddie up the darker direction that Burton took the franchise.
