Default Indiana Jones 4 no to digital format at Theaters

JoBlo reports that Paramount is informing theaters that per Steven Spieberg's orders, the film will NOT be available in digital format and that complexes who can't project 35mm format let them know.

Thus those hoping to check the film out in high-res digital projection, I'm afraid you're out of luck. It also makes one wonder about not just this film's but the original trilogy's fate on the Blu-ray format.

Speilberg filmed this movie using conventional film, I think it's his last before going to digital. So that may be the reason for it.

I think it is because Spielberg loves film projection. I remember hearing him say something like digital projection is taking the soul out of theatrical presentations.

Why would a film, shot on film, look blurry?

Good for Spielberg. Film has a higher resolution than video and when projected properly will look beautiful.

The trilogy will still look amazing on Blu Ray I am sure. Most recent 35/70 movies were digitized from the raw 35/70 footage and digitally edited then transferred back to a 35/70 master print. Speilberg was always big on doing it the original way, filming 35/70 and arranging the negatives for editing optically. This method should provide less of a generational loss when creating a digital HD master anyway.

i pay 8 bucks to go see a digital film, i get 2 million pixels on the screen for my 8 bucks, now tell me why i should pay the same amount of money for less than a million pixels!!!! maybe if it was only 4 bucks to see the movie it would be worth it, but I'm not paying for something, no matter how good the movie is, to be thinking my contacts are getting foggy the whole movie.

Shockstar, perhaps you should learn something. Film is optical, there are no pixels. There is a certain amount of definition on different types of film, so it isn't infinite, but there are no pixels. It will look amazing. Gosh people on here think 35mm film is the same as NTSC 480x720 LOL

It will look only as good as its source. The movie was made on film and it will be shown on film. Digital would not be an improvement in this case.

HA! Well I guess I won't be seeing it then! Both of my local theaters just converted 100% to digital!

Still, just because the movie wasn't filmed in digital doesn't mean that it can't be shown in digital theaters....can it?

Go to a better theatre, find the biggest one in your town/city because they will probably get first run print. Also go on to the first screening (midnight if possible) and the projectors will have been focused and had their bulbs changed specially for Indy.

I know a couple of places here are getting new 35mm for the first three flown in specially to do a marathon session before, ten start showing the fourth installment bang on midnight.

edit: see this discussion

Yep, 35/70 film can be transferred to Digital Cinema, just like it will be trasferred to Blu Ray.

uhhhhh....yeah??? do your eyes suck????

if you couldn't tell a difference nobody would pay more for a 1080p HDTV. we'd all be sitting in front of our 720p LCDs watching HD DVDs on our A3, going, blu-ray, 1080p, lol, they thought there was a difference.

1080p is twice the resolution of 720p, its very noticiable.
