Default Help me convince my family that Blu is here to stay...

So, I already have the wife sold on Blu-Ray. She's about as excited about the format as I am. As long as I buy the movies she wants in blu, she doesn't gripe about my purchases

But I visited my folks at their house the other weekend and they don't seem convinced. My dad has always been somewhat of an early adopter, but he's stubborn as all hell. A good example of this was him having all widescreen plasmas, but absolutely refusing to purchase widescreen DVDs. He refuses to believe what is generally common sense a lot of times. But nonetheless, he's always been smart at what he does and he does appreciate technology.

He recently took down his old 480p plasmas and upgraded to some 1080p LCD displays. Said he was considering getting into Blu-Ray now that HD-DVD bit the dust. I told him it was a smart move, as the 1080p standard would be around for quite a few years, similar to 480i. He refused to believe me. He kept citing new technology rapidly replacing inferior technology. I agreed, noting that both OLEDs and Laser TVs are on the horizon. But I told him that both of these newer technologies would still use the 1080p standard for several years to come (Japan is usually the first to adopt a new broadcast standard, and I've read reports that theyre not planning on updating to 8kP until at least 2020 or something like that, and the US usually adopts 5 or 10 years after the fact).

Soooo..... keeping in mind that this is one of the most stubborn people you could ever possibly meet in your entire life (an ex-military machine shop owner with an anger management problem), is there anything you think I could say or do to convince him Blu is in fact here to stay? Knowing him, once he's convinced, he'd drop thousands on updated home theatre, making my monthly trips over there with the wife much more bearable.

Did you tell your father that the 1080p standard will be probably be here until 2020? I would also mention that although broadcasts are not yet in 1080p, they should start 1080p broadcasts in several years. I also think that the best way to tell him that Blu-ray is the way to go is actually showing him a Blu-ray Disc. If you do show him, make sure you show him all of the features, such as the next-gen interactivity, pop-up menus, etc. Also make sure you tell him if he wants Internet connectivity, he needs to either get a Playstation 3 or wait until standalone Profile 2.0 BD players come out.

Hope this helps!

In my opinion he's right and wrong.

I think 1080P will become the broadcast standard in a few years and the majority of content will be 1080P. So BD will be good for quite awhile. Some TVs might get higher resolution in the future but broadcasts and disc formats wont jump ahead as fast. Broadcasters want stability. That's why most HD content is still 720p. Some is 1080i and virtually none is 1080p except BDs.

Once most broadcasts upgrade to 1080P I think they will stick there for quite awhile regardless of what Tvs jump to in a few years.

Simple... Ask him what's his other options?

It's either stay with DVD and watch subpar HD movies via on-demand services or enjoy quality HD movies from Blu-ray. With HD DVD being officially dead, content will come in much faster (since the studios only have to focus on one format).

To be clear, Blu-ray is NOT the next DVD. Their will be a worthy successor (and downloads ain't it) in the not so distant future. However, at least for the next few years, Blu-ray will be the only option and well worth the investment.

So what is he concerned about? Bluray dying, 1080p dying or dvd are fine & does not see the diffrence?????

1080p, it has took over 60 years for tv's to get where they are now. 1440p is only usefull when you get over 80"+

http://www.tvhistory.tv/index.html

Bluray is expandable & bluray will mostliky be replaced with an Ultra Bluray (100-200gig disc)

Has he seen your tv???? not the one's in the stores then have lines split a million time & are not calibrated or that.

Anyway here is a good article on bluray & about people saying dvd is "Good Enough" & upscaling BS

http://blog.ultimateavmag.com/scottw...708goodenough/

If you can, take your player over to his house & play a Stdvd & BD of the same movie, see if he sees any diffrences.

Tell him blu ray will be good as long as the PS3 is getting sold which is going to be for the next ten years i mean how many more years does he have live so he better enjoy it right now

You need to show him what Blu-Ray is about. Trying to talk someone into something never works.

As to 1080p being broadcast.......it won't because the bandwidth needed is too large. Only if the engineers can firgure out how to compress the signal enough will this happen. 1080i takes up enough bandwidth as it is and will more than likely be around for a very long time as a broadcast standard.

Your dad has to make up his own mind. All you can do is plant seeds and wait for him to believe it was his own idea.

Here is a picture of a fanboy. Let's not become one.

Try reverse psychology.

You have to show him a Blu-ray on your own setup(hopefully a reference disc of a movie he is familiar with). If that doesn't turn him nothing will.

Default Convince

I was at Best Buy today and watched one of their demos for Blu-Ray with a Samsung BD player and 40" Samsung plasma with the semicircular blue light near the pedestal base. And NO, it's not that cheesy demo with the split-screen picture showing the way too blurred DVD image on the left. We all know SD DVD isn't THAT bad.

But in this demo, they were showing scenes from POTC and several others and sports, and I was gobsmacked by the rich contrast and color. Super-deep blacks and a 3 dimensional kind of depth I've not seen before in HD. I'm not a Samsung troll since I own and love Sony overall. Got a 40" Bravia XBR LCD myself that is wonderful. But this Samsung TV/BD combo truly wowed me!

Your dad should see that demo! I don't know whether to credit the HD footage mostly, since the Pirates of...BDs are spectacular by themselves or if it was the rich black level of the TV or the 120hz refresh rate. Not sure about that last one. Sure all the action was very smooth, but I've seen HDTVs with the 120hz feature on the shelf right alongside similar models without and could not distinguish any real difference.

But anyway, I was amazed at the quality. The depth and clarity of the PQ knocked my socks off! It may be as close as I'll ever get to seeing Keira Knightly in person. Sadly.
