Blu-ray Ninja

David Twohy followed Pitch Black with this entertaining WW2 set haunted submarine story. The existing DVD is very good looking so there's the potential for an even better looking blu and the atmospheric creaking of the sub would be nice in HD. Next year sees the release of Riddick so that'd be a good time for a blu issue

I had no idea anyone had issued it, what a shame it had to be Echo Bridge, still there's hope they'll try again and get the sound right or a European pressing will turn up in due course |

In my anguish over the continuing lack of a Blu-ray release of The Abyss I decided to throw this David Twohy flick on (I'm in the mood for a movie set on or under water). I've enjoyed the film since day 1 but after revisiting it earlier today I can't help but heap praise on it from a fresh perspective. Aside from being extremely well made, acted and cast, the film itself is one creepy thrill ride from start to finish. The plot is similar to one of the later episodes of the original Twilight Zone but don't let that dissuade anyone from checking it out - this is actually quite fun, especially if you're into submarine war movies and slow-burn supernatural-tinged horror films. Crank up the audio for a true test of your speaker system as this is also a well-designed aural treat. Can't recommend this film enough. As a bonus, the PQ is fantastic
![]() BTW, since there is an existing BD, can mods move this thread into the general population? |

It's now exactly seven years since Below (2002) had its substandard, 2.0 stereo audio release from Echo Bridge. Perplexing and frustrating, since the Spanish horror it was paired with was already released on a standalone BD with identical spec just two months prior.
Anyway, the Russian BD, with lossless 5.1 audio, still looks like the only other one to date, with no prospect of any more coming. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced source for it? Last edited by Brent Reid; 04-04-2020 at 06:31 PM. |

Just watched it for the second time, after having seen it many years ago, and I gotta say, it's a very enjoyable flick. There are plenty of similar movies of the "haunted ship" variety, like Ghost Ship and Event Horizon that heavily rely on gore in addition to other horror movie tropes, while this one is much more of a suspense and jump-scare kind. It also plays with the supernatural element, the whole time keeping it in "is this thing haunted, or does it have a natural explanation" territory. And the cast, at this point, has lots of familiar faces. Galifianakis, Chinlund, Foley, Greenwood, Flemyng.. Yet, for some reason this has got to be one of the most unheard of thriller/suspense movies that received a theatrical release, since it barely generated any discussion anywhere online for the past 17 years. Which is a shame. To venture a guess and maybe generate some conversation - it's not historically accurate enough for Sub/ww2 buffs, not enough blood for gorehounds, no A-listers in the cast. So it remains forgotten because people have little reason to discover it. But it's good!
Anyway, almost a year later, and there still has not been any kind of new release. Forget UHD, the studio can't even be bothered with a standalone Blu Ray. Here's to hoping they get around to doing a proper release, eventually. Last edited by silmarillion; 09-06-2020 at 08:05 PM. |
