i was reading up about players and discs upgrading to Profile 1.1,.. and then maybe 2.0?
i know studios re-release their discs when they find another extra to put on the disc "cough, cough Blade Runner", which can be annoying when you have just payed full price for a now outdated copy. but when players do get all this fancy Profile 1.1 or 2.0 with PIP, etc. will these "early" release discs become obsolete?... will the studios re-release all of their discs when they start releasing newer discs with higher profile capabilities, and extra cool features? i was also happy to read that the PS3 is capable of upgrading profile via a simple update ![]() |

I would suspect that they are going to work on getting movies released on Blu-ray that have NOT been released so far rather then re-releasing all their titles for the new profile. I know that a few have already been re-released but here's to hoping they work on getting out the new releases and catalog titles before re-releasing movies. Just my two cents though.

Hmm, expect double dips sooner than you think, especially with the astounding level of releases using 5 to 10 years old HD masters we had so far. I'm all for a new Top Gun (with extras), Getaway, Appolo 13, to name just a few.
Blade Runner should draw the line as far as remasters go : rescan all the elements, redo all composites, redo an identical title sequence lettering (in order to avoid wavering and the image element being softer because of the analog compositing, how many BR movies have bad looking title sequence, then a switch to pristine image ?). I don't care about how much it cost, it's about preserving movies for this century. Anything less on Blu Ray in unnaceptable in my opinion. Last edited by Daredevil666; 03-03-2008 at 10:54 AM. |

I wouldn't hold your breath. It took something like 5 years for WB to reissue Goodfellas on DVD. The first version was a flipper.
Besides, the features of 1.1 and 2.0 are largely superficial. I would be more interested in a re-release if it fixed any issues with the movie quality of the first version, not for some crappy mini games, a web portal or other marginal content. |

I don't think it's fair to call Blade Runner a double dip - we've known for years that the cuts on home video weren't the final cut. That's why I haven't owned a copy up until now, I just watched friend's copies until the final cut finally came out.

what are going to be the differances between 1.1 and 2.0? the only thing i thought they were upgrading was the ability for PIP, but cant 1.1 already do this? |

Yes 1.1 does do PiP, but 2.0 will allow for more interactivity, such as downloading new trailers, accessing an online merchandise store, etc. It's bascially going to be the same thing that was on hd dvd that their fans were touting being able to have from the beginning. I think most people on here couldn't care less though. I for one am looking forward to the Fox titles that have a seperate dsic for a digital copy of the movie so I can transfer it to my PSP.

Yes RE: Extinction uses PiP, which I thought was pretty cool. It was only during certain parts of the movie, but they showed story board comparisons, as well as interviews.

Please forgive me if this is a tired question.
What is PIP, exactly? I did several searches and tried the glossary, but came up with nothing. ![]() |

Thank you
![]() That actually sounds pretty cool. I could certainly live without it, but I could see myself giving it a try. If there is no difference in pq from a 1.1 to a 2.0, then I won't be bothered at all. I rarely reference the extras. My only real concern is the actual movie. |

I think the studios are savvy enough to know when to piss off fans and when not to. If the movie is out, they won't be rereleasing it for a while. They did for fifth element and a few others. But the majority 99% will be new releases. I mean these companies want to make money. Getting out newer films (and old ones too) not repeats gets the money.
As the Geicko Gecko says, "simple, really." |
