Hi there, I am new to Blu-ray authoring. Have many years of successful experience authoring DVD from Digital Betacam decks. What is/will be the new standard for Blu-ray authoring? The deck obviously needs machine control etc. to control it from the computer.
Best regards and thank you for any help. |

Yes, thanks for that. I was more enquire about what is the professional standard VTR for Blu-ray encoding rather then which authoring software packages are available.
Is anyone doing Blu-ray encoding at this level? What VTR (deck) has become/will become the standard? Any help would be gratefully received. Best regards, |

I also don't have the answer to your question, Pato. However, I do work in this field, using
http://bssc.sel.sony.com/Broadcastan...EX_index.shtml and an entirely digital (hard drive based) workflow. No tape involved, except for import of 3rd party material (i.e. HDV tape (not an editing format)). I recommend getting the demo DVD for Sony's XDCAM EX camera, which has some testimonials of other pro studios working this way. Last edited by PeteS; 03-03-2008 at 04:04 PM. |

Thanks, the Sony HDCAM SR looks the way to go!
I am thinking of testing an Apple FCPS system. Does anyone know what is the best third party video interface? I am tempted by AJA IO or Blackmagic Multibridge Eclipse. Any help gratefully received. |

I don't think you can go wrong with either. Speaking from personal use of Blackmagic and AJA use on the PC side, the AJA wins. I've also had a chance to use Blackmagic with FCPS and that was a great combo too.

I work at a major production / post facility in Dallas, TX. To answer both your questions:
1) If you are doing blu-ray authoring, and asking about what kind of VTR deck to use, it completely depends on what footage you get. Here, we use alot of DVC Pro HD, DVCAM footage shot at 720p 59.94, and HDCAM and HDCAM SR. more than likely you are going to ingest this into an editing system first, then output for blu-ray authoring. so more importantly, you need to know what codec to encode to. Three flavors to choose from, Mpeg2, VC-1 from Microsoft, and AVC. AVC is the preferred. And before someone says it, H.264 is an MPEG4 standard, which is also the same as AVC and VC-1. 2) As far as a capture solution on an FCP system, we use all AJA I/O with the optional rack mountable break out box. Makes it really easy to hook up all the SDI sources in and out. *3) as an aside, there are only two professional blu-ray authoring tools that follow the blu-ray spec and those are Sonic Scenarist and Sony's Blu-print. Anything else is pro-sumer and wont give you many options. In both cases, you are looking at 40k-60k for the software and another 40k for the software encoder. Matt P. [QUOTE=Pato_Londres;677370]The deck obviously needs machine control etc. to control it from the computer...QUOTE]
Closest I am to that tech is Sonys XDCAM PDWF70 and F30. We shoot with XDCAMs and use the decks for ingesting into Avid via FAM or HD-SDI. Since Avid's been a b*tch working with Sony gear we really havent had deck control (buggy) since DVCAM (if I think about it the last solid deck control was betaSP). Your guess is good as mine as far as authoring. At the moment we output to HD then downconvert to SD (DVD Media). As far as HD, Ive been exporting (using Apples Composer) to AVC and using PS3 as media players in our training room. So far so good but would rather be authoring to Blu-Ray discs ![]() Last edited by bdLuvr; 03-20-2008 at 02:49 AM. |
