I hope to heaven not. with OLED being so far away from decent prices Plasma is the last bastion for us who actually want a decent picture

LED's are nothing but LCD's with a different backlight, and all LCD/LED's suffer from some nasty flaws that make them drastically inferior to RPTV's and Plasmas and CRT's.

wormraper I have to disagree with you. Sony's LED HDTV line this year is very good. Both the HX850 and the HX750 have deep blacks and excellent PQ and they are Dynamic Edge Lit LED. No they aint Plasma but I think they give Plasma a very good run for their money plus they dont use as much energy as Plasma does and off viewing angle is very good as well. And to say LED is inferior to RPTV's? I think LED gives off a much better Picture then RPTV does. LED has come along way since its inception and the nasty flaws are getting ironed out year by year. I will agree with you that all LED's are is LCD with a different backlight but much better then the old CCFL backlighting.

And plasmas have just as many flaws, even though plasma lovers hate to admit them, or just think the only thing that matters is how black a picture is, even if it's not supposed to look like that anyway.

Gone they are, but I never thought the PQ was very good on these DLPs and the color decoding was messed up. Still, they were a great deal for someone that just wanted a big image at a good price. As far as digital RPTV, I always liked LCOS better, but that has inherent engine block flaws in regards to Sony and SXRD. I dumped my 60" A3000 SXRD last year and have been very happy with my 65" Panasonic ST30.

Did their LaserVue sets have the same flaws as the traditional DLP?

pffft, plasmas have flaws that they do, almost most of them are operational flaws such as image retention or higher power usage. colors, blacks, refresh rates etc.... ALL superior on a plasma or CRT... LEDs/LCD's have all been the cheap economic version ... think of bitstarved Netflix to Blu-ray. it's cheaper and more convenient but the quality is drop down. now some of the HIGHER end LED's can come close to the LOW end plasma's in quality but still dollar for dollar Plasmas, CRT's and even RPTV's were the clear winner. (and we haven't even dug into crap like Motion blur or ghosting yet which makes it a nightmare for gamers)

I've taken back almost a dozen LED's this year alone trying to find a bedroom set it isn't even funny. I've taken back samsung's, sharps, pannys... vizio.. (havent' tried a sony but then again sony has always been the bose of the LED world, lots of money for minimal gains). and all have driven me nuts to no end. poor blacks, ghosting, colors are WAY too bright on most (had to crank the backlights down to nill to get a non neon color pallette), poor uniformity, clouding, motion blur it goes on and on.

as for black levels. of COURSE we go gaga over black levels. Black levels is by far one of THE most important of the colors, without proper blacks all the other colors appear washed out or un natural. take a look at the night sky in the middle of the night. THAT pitch color is exactly how blacks should be represented. It's probably the most fundamental building block of a good picture. LEDs' have a very un natural color pop for the other colors because the black levels are low and the brightness is out of control. it may look "shiny" but that's not how the colors are supposed to look

now am I saying that EVERYONE needs a plasma??? of course not, different needs dictate outcomes. but for those looking for impeccable picture, ever since the demise of CRT plasma has been THE videophile choice for quite some time. hopefully OLED's will make a dent once they come down to reasonable levels on their markethshare since I DO agree that some of the TLC and power requirements of a plasma can be a pain.

hmm, haven't checked out the HX850 or 750 yet, I may give them a sniff to see how they are.

I will readily admit that plasmas aren't perfect, but they're still the option I prefer.

As far as the news about Mitsubishi, I'm surprised it took them this long.

(havent' tried a sony but then again sony has always been the bose of the LED world, lots of money for minimal gains) After that comment wormraper why would you even look at them or give them a sniff if thats how you feel about Sony? To call them the Bose of the LED world is an insult and not at all true but to each is own as they say.

lol, because I'm a curious SOB... I'll check out EVERYTHING

and by the "bose" of the tv world I mean the kin of company who has nothing better than their competition usually and says "well we're SONY.. that's why we charge 200x the prices !!

basically their "brand name" is about the ONLY thing that makes them better their completion. so really they ain't bad... but the term "sony" doesn't stand for the "instant image of quality" they had 20 years ago
