Default Receiver Upconversion Quality?

Just wondered what most of you that have an upconverting receiver think about the quality of the picture.

On my Yamaha RX-V3800, I tried upconverting my 480i Dish Network signal that goes in to the receiver via S-Video(best available), to 1080P and I was not impressed. Picture filled the whole screen, but was a little hazy looking. I then tried the 720P setting, and it looked a little better, but still not as good as the 480i signal when I ran it straight to the TV.

I think I'm just going to run the signal "through" the receiver with no upconversion.

I'm actually thinking about just running the Dish Network straight to the TV via S-Video and just using the receiver for the audio via optical. Would be a little more switching inputs, but I would rather have a better picture.

What do most of you guys do?

My reciever only upconverts to 720p but my tv is 1080p. The 720p is still HD, but it is upconverted again after the reciever so that it will display properly on the tv. The double upconversion makes everything a little fuzzy. I find that it is always best to just plug into the tv and avoid having the reciever upconvert any video signals. You can try that or set your reciever to pass through only.

I pull HD for my local channels off of an antenna on a tower. I don't want to pay an extra 20 bucks a month for a HD package from Dish.

I think that's what I'm going to do.

My receiver does pass through for all HDMI inputs and the upconversion is done at the TV. This is how I prefer it.
