Default New to this game.

I have recently got a PS3 so I can view movies on my HDTV LCD and have a couple of questions.

1) I don't understand how a previously released move on DVD would then be released on BD. Does the film source have plenty of detail to put on BD or do they create the extra information for BD. I would like to know if I should replace my existing DVD collection with BD or just purchase a select choice on BD?

2) What BD movies would you recommend or reference BD that would show off the technology at at its best?

3) When BD is recorded is it in a specific resolution and then upscaled? or is it true native 1080p?

My LCD is a Samsung LNS4696D 1080p and love it, except I haven't seen it really perform without a good source. I don't think that my PS3 or XBOX360 are good sources when it comes to games, but I am hoping that BD movies will make it shine.

Sorry for the really noobish questions as I am just curiuos of what people are currently experiencing.

Hello and welcome to the forums. I hope I can help as best I can.

1)When a movie is released on both formats they share the same basic transfer, but when a movie is released on Blu Ray, it is mastered in either 2K or 4K and then downconverted to 1080p. As for older movies they go back and re-master and clean up the old film stock for High Definition video.

2)There are currently several I would recommend to you. Black Hawk Down, the Pirates films, Underworld, Cars, Close Encounters, Nine Inch Nails and Dave Matthews to name but a few. I'm not sure what types of movies you prefer, so I suggest checking out the review section, to get a better idea of what you would like to see.

3)It would depend on how the film itself was shot. If it was done using 35mm film, then it is mastered in either 2K or 4K then converted to 1080p. If it was done using digital cameras the master is easier to upconvert or downconvert to a 1080p resolution.

Not sure how correct I am on some of this, but if I am wrong someone feel free to correct me, such as Wicky, etc.

I prefer that as well, just wasn't sure about the PQ compared to Cars so I threw out what I knew.

Need to pick up Meet the Robinsons soon.

Welcome to the forum.

1) If there are movies you enjoy on DVD and you would watch again, then I would say "Yes" to buy the Blu ray version as well...you won't be sorry!

2) Casino Royale, Ratatouille, Fantasic 4 ROTSS,

...I'll add more later!

Does this movie had a good story line to it (something that would keep an adult interested)? I was contemplating picking it up, but then somewhere I read that it was like madagascar and I absolutely did not like the one.

What is 2K or 4K is that number of lines on the screen? and then downscaled to 1080p?

I would assume that most of my DVD collection would have been filmed in 35mm and then downscaled from there. Would the Star Wars series be a 4K? and possibly worth picking it up in BD if it were released? (GL please release the series )

I do like action films, including some sci-fi or even cinematic movies with beautiful lanscapes

Ya know, Chicken Little's not half bad either...

Was the first BD I got (my son picked it out) and the baseball game is incredible. You can freakin' count the blades of grass in the outfield.

I think it has more to do with coloring and overall picture resolution to bring out finer detail in the film, to resemble a picture more closely to what the director was going for. I think the first Star Wars films were all shot on 35mm film, and the last three were all shot using digital. I would pick them up too, but we all know how Lucas is. I would recommend to get The Patriot as well, you can get a copy for around $20-$25. The PQ/AQ is amazing on this film and it is the extended cut as well.
