Default Europe Loves PS3, Buys 600,000

Quote:
After record breaking sales figures were announced in the UK for Sony's latest PlayStation, it should come as little surprise that the rest of Europe so ravenously snapped up PLAYSTATION 3s. True, at €599, moving some 600,000 PS3s into gamers hands is a little surprising, but Europe loves them some PlayStations.

The BBC reports that of the 1 million PS3s shipped to retailers, 60 percent were sold through to customers. We're not sure if bacon butties were the main draw for consumers or if it was confusion that each PS3 comes with a Sony Bravia 46" HDTV, but something must've gotten into those Euros.

Wii and xBox 360 have been blasted with that! Beaten and outsold!

"but something must've gotten into those Euros."

That could only have been written by someone from the US!

"Euros", like we're all in the same country or something.

This was a console launch done right, for a change. There was no panic, mobbing and few disappointed customers. But, of course the anti-folk are out in full force trying to turn that into a negative.

Interesting. According to what I had been reading it was a complete failure. Must have been FUD.

Edit to add; I just went and read some of the comments below the article. LMAO, some great comedy in there.

PS3's got me back into gaming properly. For the last 2+ years I've been spending more time online reading about games than playing games.

I'm completely hooked on Ridge Racer 7 right now, already completed Resistance on Hard and I've completed about 6 tickets in MotorStorm. RR7 and MotorStorm are about as intense as gaming gets, after a few hours play my head is steaming!

And to cool off there's loads of stuff to fiddle with in the XMB. Love it, LOVE IT!

Default Sales...

I have been following Blu-ray sales in some european shops after the release of Playstation 3. For example www.axelmusic.com

The ratio has been 30 / 70 in favor of HD-DVD until now... The Playstation 3 release hat an immediate impact in the following weeks.

I am looking forward to seeing that the numbers finally shifts in favor of Blu-ray.

In think Playstation 3 will have a bigger impact on blu-ray sales, then some critics have believed.

That is an odd article...

Quote:
Chart Track reports the console sold 165,000 units over its opening weekend, making it the U.K.’s fastest-selling console ever.
and yet, the article reads like an obit. Am I missing something?

Yeah, 600,000 units is a complete disaster.

The problem is that the press is not used to there being units left of the shelf so they see that as a disaster.

The fact that they sold a unit to everyone who wanted one more or less is ignored.

The number they sold is ignored.

It is a failure because product remains unsold...

If that is a failure, everything you ever see in a store is a failure...?? heheh...

People keep buying games and discs, so obviously consumers are starting to ignore the incredble volume of spin on all things Sony related.

im almost willing to bet every one of those units has been sold already. my theory would be that every store sold only so many presales. then, you had only a handful willing to stand outside in the cold to get their hands on the leftovers. since stores received more shipments than expected, suddenly leftovers were there since only so many people stood in line. my theory, who knows if correct.

The most important point is people can walk into the store and get one - that was the intent. To keep supply always available. Some people will look at the options in the store (360vsPS3vsWii) to get a hands on feel before deciding on which console. If they aren't on the shelves you lose a sale.

Xbox 360's are stacked to the rafters here..guess no one is buying them

an interesting side effect of the PS3 launch would appear to be Play.com's situation with HD movies;

All their currently available HD-DVD title are in stock, while the vast majority of their available blu-ray's are out of stock or awaiting delivery!

Hopefully some sales figures will be released soon for blu-ray movies since the PS3 Euro launch. I would hazard a guess that sales have gone through the roof compared to this time last month! HD-DVD on the other hand is unlikely to have changed at all.

Apparently there are some different languages out there.

Of course, every British person knows that English can be understood anywhere in the world if one speaks loud and slow.
