Thumbs up Turbo !

At first, this movie looked pretty BAD.
I saw some teasers for it several months ago .

I just saw the new trailer in the theater this week
and the movie actually looks fabulous.
I love the story idea and can't wait to see the film.

The first couple of trailers were very promising. Then I went and saw Despicable Me 2 today and caught the latest trailer. Definitely not as excited anymore. Can already tell I'm going to hate that stereotypical short Chinese lady. But what is an American animated film these days without giving the kids cheap laughs?

Well it's Ken Jeong who's voicing her, and I'm pretty sure I just read you hate him.

Oh God! Now I find out? This is worse than I thought.

There goes this being another potential Kung Fu Panda or How to Train Your Dragon. Not that I really expected that in the first place.

Saw the Turbo trailer before Monsters U, and not only did BOTH movies have the exact same joke about the "running snail" (huff, puff) they also had the same "Impossible dreamer" subplot, so it was easier to make back-to-back A-B comparisons and delve into that eternal philosophical question:
Why are Pixar comedies always good, and Dreamworks movies always bad? If, as your old high-school writing teacher always told you "Good writing comes from within", what intangible Within factor keeps tripping one of the two studios up?

And think the "Cheap laugh" observation puts the finger on a bit of it:
Katzenberg headed Dreamworks because he felt too picked-on at Disney...And as a result nearly EVERY Dreamworks movie is about poor nerdy losers picked on by big mean obnoxious people, and his dream isn't just to shine or be a success in his chosen field (like Mike wanting to be his childhood scarer hero), but to be not picked on any more. And to emphasize this point in nice one-syllable terms, there's rarely a character in a DW movie, main, supporting or background extra, who ISN'T portrayed as an obnoxious self-deluding dork with perfect license for the audience to snicker behind his/her back. Including the hero.
It's like the elementary-school psychologists say: Bullied children will grow up only learning how to bully....Imagine if some loving hand had reached to help lil' Jeffrey in time.

This doesn't look to promising. I mean, it doesn't look bad, but I get a Cars-vibe, but without the actual cars, and the trailer basically gave away the entire film, unless there's a super-twist that's yet to be revealed. Not a film I'll be seeing on the big screen. Seems like Dreamworks are pretty hit and miss these days. I LOVED The Croods, Rise of the Guardians and Kung Fu Panda 2, but Madagascar 3 I thought was terrible, and Puss in Boots, although amusing, was not as good as I had hoped. I'm guessing this will be one of their weaker efforts, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong!

Which makes it still American since it is funded by an American studio.

Im heading out in a couple hours to see this with my kids. We all laughed at the trailers, and I think it will be fun. Either way, I wont have paid a dime to see it thanks to movie money.

let me know what you think. I am going on Saturday, movie money in hand. Unfortunately I will be paying out of pocket anyways, since the 3D show we are going to is 10.50 and the movie money is 7.50, but 9 bucks for three people to see a 3D movie isn't bad in my eyes.

My daughter is so excited for this, and I am going in with my usual "I'm sure it will be fun" mind set.

I'm going to try to go see Despicable Me 2 this weekend and will hopefully see Turbo next week or the week after that. It seems like there is a new animated film out every week this summer!
