I needed to edit this , ok check out HD.ca for deals and also Visions Electronics they are Canadian sites and they offer better deals than most brick and mortar stores . I also remember seeing this week at FS the Polk RTi 10 at $299 each for that price no one is beating this older Rti line .
I really need to stress that I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to speakers, so while I appreciate the links, I really need some direction towards a particular set, haha. However, I did browse through and find the Polk TL 1600 for an affordable price (and free shipping!), but I'm still waiting for people to weigh-in on why everyone has only suggested tower speakers so far! I'm nervous about getting smaller ones, space efficient as they may be, since no one seems to be recommending them. Also, are 8ohm speakers alright for a 6ohm receiver?

Thanks!

dont worry to much about ohm rating until youre talking about a 4 ohm nominal speaker, those can, but not always stress a receiver; would depend on how power hungry the speakers are. it would also depend on how long the speakers operate in that low of a range, but most speakers all have dips into the lower ohm levels so receivers can fluctuate with them.

Thanks for the input callas.

And what's your opinion on the tower speakers vs. the smaller ones? For example those I posted in the post just about you there, and the bigger ones people have been recommending.

I will be honest, I would prefer smaller speakers if the quality difference is not too vast. I have enough room to squeeze big speakers into the room, but it would certainly be a squeeze.

Ok Fernando but the OP is really tight budget and has no more than a few hudreds, my BIL has the Polk Foot Rest and ir serves him alright for the price, I know i had an Energy S10.3 and it blew this thing out of the water but honestly we have to work with our budget and given the price, it.s a worth it, It's $99 at BB actually.

Are you talking about the speakers or the sub's ? His budget is $300 this 5 speakers are $374.99 tell me where i can beat that price quality ? so 74.99 dollars for a 5.0 i don't think that will make him a huge hole in is budget and later he can had a sub .

Sorry i just saw that you were responding to the sub Too much wine already

Then 2 pairs of this for $300 Energy CB-10 available at FS, maybe you could get another pair and use a bookshelf for the center, the Polk Audio you linked to are really small Satellite speakers but they could work well for you.

I would agree with that but not sure the OP is as hardcore as some others, so if he wants 5.1 there are some decent complete systems but 1 would start with a $300 nice set of bookshelves, I agree.

He may not be hardcore, but he'll be clamoring for better sound before you know it. We've all been there....

The thing is and it's easy for us , is when you start with a $300 speakers at the end you will spend $1000 at least by buying everything and some would like to have something good to start .

BTW Pat told me that BB will start selling Fluance speakers in store . I tough to buy there top of the line with the 30 day trial but i found the center to be weak so i'm more interested in Aperion now .

I'm an apartment dweller too and over the years I've gone with a variety of setups and a good set of towers (and they don't have to be huge) can give you a lot of flexibility. You can easily get by without a center channel (your left-right mains probably won't be more than 8-10 feet apart anyway) and you can even get by without a sub for a lot longer than you might think.

It look's that Aperion are getting there but i need to listen to them but till now i only read good things .

The Fluance speakers where well reviewed ( the XL7F ) for there price point in Audioholics - of course we have to take this with a grain of salt , but $500 pair for the towers it's in a lot of guys budget ( minus the center , IMO they should have made a better one ) also one of there advantages is ... lifetime warranty and this is a + for us canucks

Well for sure at this price point I would not expect miracles but i am sure they sound decent and they do have a great warranty. Now how long is the company gonna be around for is another story.

exactly, that is why I suggested he look at that dealer for PSB and Paradigm speakers. a higher quality pair of monitors would be better then most entry level towers.

Guys, thanks so much for your input so far. I'm going to come back and ask some more detailed questions about your recommendations but I'm just running out to get stuff ready for New Years tonight.

One thing I did want to mention is that given the Samsung HTIB set I have right now, even the least good sounding of the lot you've recommended is going to sound far better than what I'm used to. Because of that, I'm happy staying in the 'entry level' category for now and when I get a bigger place with a bit more flexibility I will be happy to upgrade piece by piece as some of you have suggested (and then I'll be back with more questions!). However, given that I am suddenly with receiver and without speakers, my main concern is getting a whole set for cheap just for a degree of normalcy since I don't foresee myself being able to add bits piece by piece in the near future due to my priorities.

One last question, I'm actually curious about those tower speakers with built-in subwoofers. My initial reaction is that they must be TERRIBLE, but I've actually seen some decent reviews. What are your thoughts of these types of things (I know they offer them at BestBuy and Future Shop)? If they weren't terrible, I wouldn't actually mind getting something like that and adding a subwoofer later if they're cost effective and of good value.
