I guess it will be the same troublesome transfer as the US release?

One of my all time favourite movies, would be great to see it get a new transfer but that's highly unlikely.

I've got the German version, Really don't think it's as bad as some have reported. Have seen much worse on BD that haven't been half as maligned as this one.

Indeed. It was an early Blu-ray release so it took a lot of shit for not looking like The Searchers or something, but the movie will always have that gauzy, hazy look because that's how it was shot. Now we know better, but the bad reputation remains. Like a lot of Fox's earlier releases, the encode isn't outstanding in terms of detail but it isn't beset by noise reduction, overdone sharpening, contrast boosting etc, and although a new transfer would probably eke out some more detail it wouldn't be a dramatic amount. As it is, I think it's fine.

Does that logic also apply to Midnight Cowboy? I want this on blu but have been put off by the review of the transfer

Midnight Cowboy was released more recently so I don't think there was the same sort of expectations when it came to looking at Blu-rays. Midnight Cowboy, like Butch Cassidy, benefits from a lack of digital tampering. But, as I understand it, the source print used for the HD master is not great, and its an old master. So it doesn't look as good as it could. I've not seen either yet. But I think as long as a BD is not an upconvert and doesn't have lots of digital tampering applied, it tends to be a solid upgrade to the DVD.

You betcha. MC is a decent transfer of a fairly grubby looking movie. Taking of Pelham 123 (original) is another one that springs to mind.

Fox recently redid Patton to correct the horrible transfer. Hopefully this one gets an upgrade as well. I've been holding off getting it until they do it right.

Anyone watched this yet, just wondering if it looks any better than the old US one?

Haven't gotten around to watching it yet, so can't comment on the AQ/PQ, however, the extras are as follows;

- Commentary by Director George Roy Hill, Lyricist Hal David, Documentary Director Robert Crawford Jr. and Cinematographer Conrad Hall
- Commentary by Screenwriter William Goldman
- All of What Follows is True: The Making of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid documentary
- The Wild Bunch: The True Tale of Butch & Sundance featurette
- Deleted Scenes with optional Director's Commentary
- Original Teaser and Trailers

Have you watched the film yet? Just wondering what the picture/audio is like.

I'm guessing that the Steelbook will have the same transfer and the £11+ premium is for the (albeit nice) packaging?
